The advice on this thread is great for losing weight, but for example, you aren’t going to weigh your food for the rest of your life. If you don’t re-wire your brain when it comes to your relationship with food, the weight will always, slowly but surely, pack itself back on over time.
I think a scale and measuring food is a damn good way to start training yourself on good food choices. It will also make you come to a realization of poor past food consumption choices and how to make better choices moving forward.

3 weeks in and down to 196 from 204 at 5’11”. Trying to work my way down to 175 before a winter bulk. I still don’t like how I look in the mirror, but I had to move up a belt loop this weekend, so trying to use the little victories to stay motivated.

Looking for fellow baws suffering
I’m watching my carb intake and eating fat and protein. I’m not counting calories, carbs, etc. I’m just being smart about what I eat. No fast food, no late evening snacks. I eat until I’m full for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I’m lifting weights 3x a week and I’m walking/running for 30 minutes 3x a week. I have no specific weight loss goal in mind. It has just worked, though.

There is just no way. Something else has got to be going on for anything remotely lose to that to happen. You would have to run a deficit of over 2000 calories a day for that to happen. That's pretty improbable. You are not even that active, plus eating 3 meals a day. Can you give any more details?

quote:Found out I have type 2 diabetes and immediately changed my lifestyle. I retired from the military and went from 195 to 215 pounds in about a year. I was sedentary and eating lots of junk. I drank a pour or two of whiskey 4 nights a week.
Can you give any more details?
I haven’t done anything else other than what I posted. I drink black coffee in the morning and water throughout the day. I’ve averaged 1 drink a week. I went from sitting all day to the lifting weights 3x a week (full body workouts) and running/walking 3 to 4x a week. That really is it. And I have lost 18 pounds so far.
Maybe what I’m eating is just leaving me more full feeling. I have a scrambled egg with a bit of bacon and sausage in the morning and an apple.
Lunch has typically been pork loin or baked chicken and a salad (spinach, ham, garbanzo beans, carrots, cucumbers, etc.). Dinner has been what my wife cooks but brown rice or whole grain pasta instead of the white rice/pasta. No fast food or snacks.
I feel great and have a lot more energy. I’m noticeably slimmer. The low carb thing has to be helping me burn my fat off. I mean, I’d love to get down to 185 but I’m really just trying to be healthy.
ETA - Looks like it is 5 weeks to the day today.

I am happy for your success and I appreciate you you adding some detail. It's just that your claim was not believable. Losing 18lbs in a month is freakish unless you are super obese (like 400+lbs). It's compounded by the fact that you aren't restricted eating or being super active (doing a cardio intense competition). The math doesn't math. You made it sound normal and casual.
I'm guessing your initial weight was an outlier. Maybe you weighed yourself later in the day after a huge meal and it got way higher than what it really was. We've all had those type of spikes. Could that be the case?

Starting today.. got that post baby no. 2, dad bod in full swing. Doing a form of keto with my wife to hopefully get us both back on track. Dreading it honestly, gonna miss pasta. And bread. And fried food. But it needs to be done.
Edit. Dreading isn’t true, but it’s definitely going to suck for a week or two as my body adjusts. Definitely a stress eater - kids don’t sleep? Biscuit and soft drink before work. Tough day at work? Burger place down the road and an drink or two after work. That sort of thing.
Was ideal weight (or below weight) in high school and college and I’m 40 lbs. above that now, so that’s the goal, or at least close. May have been a little underweight then, so somewhere in that 30-40 lbs is what I’m hoping to lose.
We’ll see how it goes. Besides the weight I’m hoping it’ll change my relationship with food - from something I do when I’m stressed, or bored, so more of a necessity “I’m eating to fuel my body” kind of thing. Also doing it for the kids - want them to grow up in a household where we’re mindful of what we’re putting in our body.

I don’t know what’s normal/not normal. All I can say is I don’t feel like I’m on a diet, I’m not feeling hungry, and I’m losing the weight.
I’d say the one flaw in your thinking is about the lack of being really active. My lifting is pretty intense and I think it’s helping burn more calories. I’m probably in ketosis which is helping burn fat. Whatever it is, it’s working and it doesn’t feel like a chore.

It’s not hard to believe he lost 18 pounds in that period of time, it would be hard to believe he lost 18 pounds of body fat however. You can easily lose well over 5 pounds in the first week alone after you have shed all of the water weight. That’s why I never do my initial weigh in when I start a cut until after a few days of eating clean, it gives me a more accurate base line.

4.5 lbs a week is not normal, especially over a month. That would require extreme deficits of over 2000 calories a day for an extended period of time. Your workouts are topping out at probably 500 calories on the high end, with maybe some additional afterburn. It just sounds a bit farfetched. I'm not pointing it out to be a dick, it just doesn't add up..

I’ve been consistently losing weight since the beginning of the year. Started at 236 and before leaving for vacation hit 226…according to Inbody I’ve lost 14 lbs of fat and gained about 4 lbs of muscle. Last scan before beach I lost about 1.5 lbs of lean mass though…so I was cutting too deep. I could feel it too…really fatigued last couple of weeks. BF% down from 20% to 16%…down a full pants size since Jan.
I lift 3 days a week and on off days walk 2 miles and do about 15 mins hard on weighted sled. Try to walk the dog in the afternoon and cut out all drinking during week nights. It’s not too bad.
Diet is the key. I WFH so I locked down eating to be as clean as possible and push for 180 to 200 grams of protein. When I get back I’m going to add more carbs during the day to bump up calories and try to get more energy. If I can eat around 2800 cal a day I should be good and not crash. It’s really trial and error dialing in eating enough to keep your energy levels up with what you’re doing but still managing to slowly lose fat. The next 10lbs is going to be a battle though.

I started eating yogurt with bananas, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries, with a bit of granola on top of all that for breakfast. That combined with less bread, more water, more walking and will drop below the Mendoza line soon. I’m 6’1” and was as high as 235 in 2017 and hovered at 210-220 for the last few years.
