What do you guys do when at a bar when doing the low carb or Keto diets? Obviously no beer just wondering what types of bourbon or whiskey I can do with water as to be if minimal disruption to my diet

Straight liquor has no carbs, but you have to keep in mind that the body will burn off alcohol first, storing all fat & carbs eaten in the meantime. Also keep in mind that alcohol is very calorie dense at 7cal/gram

Vodka's, scotch, bourbons, whiskeys. Dry white and dry red wines. I mentioned in another thread, 2-3 Michelob Ultras or miller lites wont be terrible. There are some other low/zero carb beers, but not many in America.

I'm pretty versed in bourbons, whiskeys, and red wine. I've dabbled in white wine and scotch. I've tip toed in vodkas.

Don't worry about the calorie nonsense. Bill has a good write up on it on his calories proper website. In this context with low sugar, you are fine. Not to say that no
other health risks that may come up. And your body will hate you if you drink too much

Here is the study he used. You may need to use to internet magic to read it though.

r/ketodrunk is an actual subreddit for this exact question.

I enjoy a white tequila, soda, lime; very refreshing

Any alcohol in my systems stalls weight loss though.

I really don't worry about it. If I'm drinking often enough to derail my diet, I'm drinking too often.

One limiting factor is tolerance - If I've been super low carb/Keto for more than a few weeks, I can't really handle more than 2-3 drinks without feeling like shite.

The drinking isnt the problem

it's needing a greasy burger, fries, or pizza for the hangover the next day

I like gin, so Bombay on the rocks with two olives.

Also if taking shots, just tequila.

People do the club soda thing, but that shite taste nasty to me.

Ethanol is a carbohydrate. It fits the definition perfectly.

It does not stop fat burning, ethanol creates fat in your liver.

Ethanol and fructose are processed very similarly in the liver. 90% of the ethanol and fructose molecule make new fat (de novo lipogenesis). One can of coke will have the same fat creation abilities as one can of Budweiser. The only issue with coke (or drinks and food with fructose) is you don't get that immediate feedback to stop as you do with ethanol. Note, anything with high fructose corn syrup as an ingredient is not fat free.

Fructose causes people to get fat just like beer/alcohol.

Funny thing, my BG level is 71 after 1/2 a bottle of wine and steak/bacon. I literally just measured it (Fasted all day, bacon at 6 and steak at 7) after a year of not knowing where my monitor was. I've done several self experiments with steak, bacon, eggs, wine, bourbon, vodka...(I need to do beer) to see the effects on BG over the years. It isn't much. Red wine may bring it up to 85 after a 75 baseline. Chardonnay and chianti reduced it after 4 glasses (I'd like to try this again) by 12-15. Crappy Trader Joe's $3 Buck Chuck Merlot raised it from 89 to 94. Trader's Chardonnay reduced it, 87 to 72....after 4 (5oz) regular size glasses of wine. Another one that raised it was Trader's Shiraz, 78-94 after 4 glasses...hardly a bump.

Bourbon? After 3 (two finger) pours of on the rocks, 89 rasied to 94 over the course of the night.

I actually agree that it doesn't stop fat burning. However, I think we are confounding a lot of data on "what" exactly is causing the fat in the liver. Is it an excess of wine, bourbon, or gin? Or, is it beer? I have a sneaky feeling that beer, and the excess in crappy foods associate with drunkeness.....pizza, fast food....etc...are our main problem.

Pick up a BG monitor at Walmart for a grand total of $50 (monitor, lancets, the test strips may be more) for a year's worth of fun.

I really think ethanol is different from carbohydrates. Too tired to really dive into chemistry currently. But their different reactions in the body make me think they are inherently different.

***before hitting the bed. 1 bottle of wine ended up with a measure of 55mg/dl

In interest of full transparency, I haven't really looked into alcohol metabolism while in ketosis since the first time I did keto. So my info is really old and likely outdated. I'll take my downvotes in stride.

Undoubtedly. It's easy to vastly over consume when drunk.

This is true. My tolerance decreases and my hangovers are worse. Plus, hydration is a bit more difficult to manage.

buuuut I still drink lol. Vodka and soda for me. Sometimes I'll do a few drops of bitters or peychauds to make it taste different

Combine the facts that I don’t drink like I did in college with really changing the way I eat, my tolerance level is absolute shite. I LOVE beer. My favorite is a pitch black porter or a smoky bourbon infused beer. However, they are really high in calories and alcohol content (for a beer), so they don’t help me reach my fitness/health goals. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them. I try to enjoy only 2 or 3 drinks per week, typically on Saturday evening after eating only a light meal until my dinner (cheat meal). You can enjoy alcohol, you just have to set limits.

Spirits with water or soda water are going to be less harmful than alcoholic beverages like daiquiris, sugary mixed drinks, beer and wine. The ladder contains a lot more carbs than just ethanol that your liver has to process. Furthermore spirits are cleaner due to the distillation process. You are drinking all the impurities (in very small amounts) when you drink un-distilled fermentations like beer and wine. Distillation removes the majority of impurities (like methanol, acetone, propanol, butanol, iso-butanol, amyl-alcohols, and other impurities produced by yeast and some bacteria during fermentation).

There you go. Moderation.

I think the key is the following:

1. Eliminate sugar as much as possible. Cokes, cakes, deserts, etc., etc., have to go.
2. Eat fats.
3. Eat proteins.
4. Eat carbs in the form of leafy green vegetables and whole fruits (not squeezed...you need the fiber).
5. Limit chips and bread.

Bottom line...look at the federal government food pyramid and turn it upside down. Do the opposite of their recommendations.

Also supplement with the following:

Potassium
Magnesium
K2
Fish oil

And get moderate exercise.

Party on the weekend.

Seems to work for me.
