Is it bad form to decline a “double or nothing” proposal on the last hole?

Having a debate with my friend. I say if you’re up say 40 dollars and the stakes are 5&5 then pressing to 10&10 is fine but I don’t have to accept a “double or nothing” proposal. What says the GB?

It just depends on if you want to look like a ;little bitch or not.

Golfing with friends and betting isn't about the money. The money just makes it more competitive which can make it fun. You are giving the other guy a chance to pay you nothing or a lot. If he wants to give you more money, let him. If you lose the hole, you really didn't lose anything.

I would expect him to buy me a beer if he won the double or nothing bet.

Definitely going to get different responses to this question and I’m not sure ther is a correct answer. I have a problem with the last hole being worth as much as the first 17 combined. Just does not make sense to me to lose all you’ve won on one hole. By comparison, if I was up $200 at the casino and had to leave, I’m not going to risk it all on the last hand.

The way I’ve handled it recently is to tell the guy I’m betting that he can have one press per side, but if he waits until 9 or 18, then he can only press half of what he’s down. This gives him a chance to strategize when he wants to press and doesn’t give him a way to get out of everything with one hole.

I do that all the time. Of course, I'm sure I have a problem.

Personally, I think it has to do with the attitude of your opponent. If he's been a dick all day, you don't have to do crap. If he's helped to make the game fun, what the hell....Like playing with house money.

if you're playing with friends id say its bad form but if its a random dude or a tournament side bet hell no...he should've pressed earlier

of course this all depends on your confidence on 18

our weekly game is 10 a hole and you can press for the full amount at any time and whoever is up doesn't have the option to decline. "Press for it all" gets said on 18 more often than not. I like it since I'd rather have a chance to make a fair amount of money instead of just trying to nickle and dime 20 bucks or something smaller.

We usually play birdies double and eagles triple though so a big press can get huge depending on the hole.

If you tried to decline a press in the game you wouldn't be invited back

Do whatever you want.
We play for next to nothing so double or nothing would not spook us.

If someone presses on the last hole the other party(s) have to take the press in our group.

I used to play in a pick up game when I was younger so I would wind up playing with people I wouldn't call friends. I've been up and turned down double or nothing and presses on the last hole after beating them for 17 holes.

If it were a friend, I usually will take it and even if i win just ask for a few beers at the clubhouse or the bar after. I don't like taking money from friends though.

Declining makes you look like a pussy IMO. It’s house money. With friends you are honoring your friend by giving him a chance to break even. If he loses and you win big buy him drinks and maybe dinner. For strangers if you decline it’s like saying you care more about the money than the honor of winning. Golf is above all a game of honor, right?

It’s negotiable. Tell him “nah, but we can make it a $20 hole”.
