I played professional golf in the mid to late 90s. Bryson is full of crap with regard to his numbers.

Back in my day, a PGA Tour card was worth an easy $250K in extra income via sponsorships. My Hogan/Nike/Korn Ferry Tour card netted me about 10% of that number. I do not know, but do expect, those numbers have increased somewhat. I also played several corporate outings for extra cash as well.

The year I played I'd guess my expenses were around $50K. I was able to drive to many events instead of fly and that saved a lot of cash. Plus, a lot of events were in smaller towns that didn't cost an arm and a leg to live in for 4 days.

Like I said, Max expenses between 75-100k for travel alone when he was first starting.

That’s doable for up and coming guys like him. But he could have gotten by on less if he had to.

Drive to more events, credit card rewards for hotels and flights, stay at crappier hotels, take advantage of free food.

A guy like Martin Trainer is probably not racking up $90k-$100k in expenses for a PGA Season. He is barely getting by and has to make do on less.

Well if this was the case mid 90’s I guess I stand corrected.. I’d assume it is double that now so around $100k.

Makes you wonder how many really good golfers that would be tour pros aren't playing on tour bc they couldn't survive the lower tours monetarily.

Did you ever play Colony West GC (Florida) on the Hogan Tour ?

I heard it was brutal for the Hogan Tour guys.

A lot of the lower level players on KF and other tours get someone to stake them for a cut of future earnings.

They find a few rich guys at their local club and give a run at it for a few years.

500k in expenses

it’s not $500K in direct expenses. He’s talking about all the taxes you have to pay as well. As independent contractors, they are paying over 15% and Social Security taxes. Not to mention all the federal income taxes and the state income taxes in every state in which they win money. Just hiring a CPA to do all of the accounting work cost a ton of f*cking money. And, they need to maintain a homebase for their family and for when they’re not actually on the road playing golf. And if you’re ranked 165, you’re not getting all the freebies that the top 50 or so golfers get.

You think they tax you more than what you make?

You get taxed on Revenue-expenses……

Bryson is a dumbass. Guys making 500,000 have a very comparable upper middle class life. What sucks is the time on the road means they get to enjoy none of it

Take home pay for someone making 500k would roughly be 200k after taxes, expenses, health care etc

I'd think the worst part for the guys earning even 250k wouldn't be that they were losing money overall, it would be the inconsistent cadence of the income. Taking home 80k is great when you're getting paid bi-weekly. Gets tricky when you make nothing or very little for a month or three.

I have always said that professional golf is the cruelest pro sport out there.

Sure the top 100 or so love a nice lifestyle….but that is not be norm.

I don't think it's any worse or better for golf than many sports though. You have millions of golfers in the world and every one of them would love to play on the tour. Just can't happen practically. Many try at different levels to get there, few succeed. Same for any pro sport, individual or team.

Also, Bryson was perhaps the dumbest person to ask about the breakeven point on the tour.
1 - He's not the sharpest pencil in the crayon box
And 2 - He's on a different level than the guys that are considering the breakeven point.

There is a difference between breakeven as far as winnings and tour cost, vs. breakeven as far as after all your expenses like food, rent, supporting your family...that's just called life

Very close friend of mine spent a few years on the PGA tour and did not spend close to 500k on the necessities. Maybe if you factor in bar tabs and nights out it’s close

I was told by a PGA Tour player's father 3 years ago that expenses run $375,000 annually for the average tour player. $500K to break even seems legitinate

As someone else said, Max Homa has already said you could get by for $75,000.
