What do logistics look like for Tour players?

Does the PGA ship clubs for them from stop to stop? Or do they fly with the players? Is there a ‘Tour’ hotel that everyone stays in or everyone on their own? Do groups of players charter private or more fly commercial? Do most have a ‘manager’ that does it all or do they take care themselves?

Really interesting subject given the complexity that can be in the background while they are trying to perform at a high level

Clubs go with players.
There are host hotels, but a lot of top players rent houses for their team.
Some fly privately, but most fly commercial
The tour has a travel agent

Asked to breakdown why that is, Bryson explained how as independent contractors, life is very costly on Tour:

“We’re independent contractors. We’ve got to pay for all of our expenses—every hotel we have to pay on our own, food etc. You do everything yourself. And you’ve got a family to feed. And you’re missing cuts. And when you miss a cut, you make nothing.

To put Bryson’s statement into context, the 166th player on the 2020 PGA Tour money list made $486,337 in earnings, which shows that, if accurate, earning half a million dollars on Tour each year likely only allows a player to break even.

Gonna go out on a limb and say those expenses vary depending on how much money a player has. A player traveling as much as a PGA Tour pro is going to have so many frequent flyer miles he likely isn't paying much in travel expenses if he's smart, and lower ranked guys are probably driving a lot more. There's also going to be a huge disparity in where these guys eat and where they are staying during tournaments. Yeah, I'm sure a guy making a lot of money on tour splurges a little bit more on those things than the guys just trying to keep their tour cards. $500k just seems a little excessive without a lot of perspective from Bryson

Take away 30% taxes, add caddie cost/salary, travel costs, food, home cost of normal family and he is not too far off point. I don’t think he is saying they are destitute earning less.

Caddies do not make 10%. Winning caddies make 10%.

Caddies generally make an agreed upon amount whether they win, place or are cut. Winning caddie gets 10% or whatever they agree on ahead.

Typical caddie agreement on PGA Tour (based on conversations with friends who still caddy on Tour)-

Weekly salary (usually about $1K). 3% of any money the pro makes when he finishes outside the Top 10. 5-7% for a top 10 and 10% for a win.

That is by choice. Two time major winners that young with that smile don’t fly commercial because they have to.

- State taxes

Florida golfers do not have that.
Or do you pay the state tax from the state that you played in? Is it where you played or where you live?

I thought tax laws are tied to where the money is earned.

Not sure, but I know not having a state tax is one of the reasons a ton of golfers live here.

Yes it’s like other pro athletes.

File state tax returns for all states in which you earn money. God that was a PITA for a couple of years.
