Zelda: Breath of the Wild is boring me to tears, does it get better?

Before you downvote me, hear me out.
I like the Zelda franchise, its not my all time favorite franchise, but I buy the games. Usually not day 1 purchases but I get them eventually. I believe Ocarina of Time was damn near flawless and one of the best games ever, but all the other 3D Zelda games I have been played are great, but not on the same level as OoT. Enjoyable, solid, 8 or 9 out of 10 games.
I bought BotW over a year ago and have barely made any progress at all. It doesn't feel like a Zelda game? I wish there was a bit more structure to it. It's almost overwhelming in a way that you are just kind of thrown into the world and on your own. Maybe my problem is comparing it to other Zelda games like OoT and Wind Waker instead of treating it as its own game.
I haven't played it in months, because it just wasn't clicking for me. The cooking concept didn't appeal to me nor did the weapon crafting concept. I don't remember where I left off. I might have beaten about 10-15 shrines or so before stopping? Then Super Mario 35 came out and I haven't played it since.
Anyway I still have it on my Switch but I haven't gotten far into the game at all. Does it get better?

I 100% am on board with you. I need to give it another shot but I didn’t like having weapons break every other minute and all.
Fenyx rising was said to be a Zelda BoTW type but I loved it. Heard the Nintendo version sucked, so beware.

The zones around the actual bosses are neat. Zora kingdom and such.
Exploring the open world is a chore imo. Too big.
There are some obscure neat areas. Labyrinths and a pitch black forest etc.
I enjoyed the weapon durability . Just throw the broken weapon for bonus damage and equip one of the other 20 you have in your bag. No complaints here on that.
The world was too big and climbing a mountain in the rain loses its appeal after maybe 15 seconds. The shrines get repetitive too.

To each their own, I think it is near perfection.
I never even dealt with much crafting or cooking. I think that it’s very awesome in that, while those depths are there, it’s not necessary to complete the game

That's what I loved about it. It didn't hold your hand, once you left the Plateau it was up to you where you wanted to go. My favorite moments were accidentally discovering something cool, or seeing something for the first time that I didn't even know was on the game.
I had a few friends and coworkers that were playing at the same time and it was refreshing to talk about the same game, but everyone was having a different experience and path.

If you play through the first divine beast, and it still hasn’t improved for you, then it probably won’t change much for you further into the game.
If you’re looking for the traditional dungeons and bosses, you’re not going to find it in BotW.

Not really. The game was a step in a new and what I think can be a good direction...however; the shine aspect used to make up for the lack of world dungeons/temples is terrible. The divine beast were a total fricking let down. Just no real atmosphere. I donno it just didn’t feel right and 100 mini puzzles with the same vibe..isn’t going to fix that for me.
I don’t even want to start on item durability. I mean the system and combat...great! Just tone it down a notch.
The map/aesthetics. Beautiful. And I think that’s why I’m so disappointed. What’s makes Zelda great for me is going through the lost woods and finding that forest temple...BoTW could have done that so well...but it didn’t. It robbed me of that and I think that’s why I’m just disappointed.
I don’t even care if they keep shrines. Just give us the temples and dungeons. They had the perfect world for it and they failed.
I love Zelda. I “kind of liked” BotW. It’s not in my Top 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn should have won Game of the Year.

I need to emulate this one day

quote:Agree as well. With that i want specific new weapons/tools that are only unlocked in those temples. (For example the Hookshot from OoT and such)

My hope is that they have had a multiple game setup planned. And that game 1 (BoTW) was more dealing with "man made" stuff shrines, divine beast, guardians. Hopefully BoTW2 will be more focused on more "natural" things. Like temples of old times (forest temple and all, and yes i know temples arent naturally made. But i mean even more ancient than the shrines)
Im sure its prolly a long shot. But im hoping thats the route they go.

It was a fun game just not a good Zelda game to me which kept me from loving it, lack of dungeons biggest offender for me. MGS5 was the same thing. Perfectly fine game, not a great MGS.

It’s one of those games that I appreciate that it’s probably close to a masterpiece, but something just doesn’t do it for me. I respect the Zelda franchise, but I’m not a true fan.
Still though, it’s good for gaming that long-standing franchises like this are going strong

My thoughts exactly. I’m a fan of both franchises, and was hoping they’d make an open world sequel of Peace Walker (which is what mgs5 is) and was really disappointed. For me Breath of the wild just felt too open ended. I love the progression and unlocking of new stages in Zelda oot and mm. This game just doesn’t do it for me. Also I absolutely loathe the switch and it’s controls.

I felt like scaling the towers to reveal that map gave me that feeling. I got excited when I would see a tower in the distance.

Agreed.
I wasn't that crazy about BOTW. I loved other Zelda games. I didn't like weapons breaking every 2 minutes and finding items to cook/trade in constantly. Just seemed too grindy. I lost interest in it, I might give it one more chance, but I do agree that its too overwhelming.

I was playing it but wasn’t feeling GOAT vibes although enjoying it. Then traveled for a month without playing. When I got home I had no idea what I was doing (kept dying in the fire/lava zone) and figured I needed a proper reboot but never found the energy

It was far from perfect. The weapons break down was weird. I have since grown to appreciate in other RPG's the more structured user friendly maps. You have to wait to get the item just to ping the shrines.

Yeah it was so exciting seeing a tower. I liked the old style dungeons; not some of the move the controller to get a ball through a maze stuff. i liked lighting torches, moving blocks in slide, shooting things to get past a dungeon
Having to go in and remove all your metal every time it stormed was weird. Also the volcano areas in needing a special suit was so sensitive in dying.

what about those people that were on the paths of travel that stole all your stuff?

I miss the dungeons and the sense of progression that earlier games utilized.
I can appreciate what BotW tried. It implements its ideas very well. I can see where it would be immensely captivating for those who enjoy this style of game, but ultimately I end up being sort of indifferent towards it.
I still need to go and work on the dlc but it feels like a chore to me.
