Everyone has to justify their job and existence, even if they aren't actually contributing to the final product.

It's not a problem unique to the gaming industry. Going from aforementioned "small group of people" operating with "limited resources" to a larger company was certainly eye opening for me with regard to the sheer amount of people who seemed content to simply "push paper" or constantly invent new boxes to tick just to justify their existance.

Wolverine has sold through 1.9M copies (1M in pre-launch digital pre-orders), generating $130M - @alineaanalytics estimates.

Of these revenues, 22.9% were physical. As always, these estimates don’t include unsold retail copies, which publishers often report in their sold-in numbers.

Wolverine’s early success means it just passed Death Stranding 2‘s lifetime PS5 copies sold and revenues ($129M and 1.8M copies). And Wolverine is already the top-performing new PlayStation Studios game on PS5 this year, leapfrogging:

- MLB The Show ($99M and 1.5M copies sold on PS5)
- Marathon ($60M and 1.8M sold across all platforms)
- Saros ($40M, 510K sold on PS5)
- Marvel Tokon ($49M and 740K sold on all platforms)

Wolverine‘s top market, by a landslide, is the US, accounting for 53% of the player base, followed by the UK (7%), France (5%), and Canada (4%). Logan is Canadian, after all.

So yes, Wolverine has sold well, but its commercial long tail is limited by its mixed media and streamer reception. Unlike Spider-Man, which reviewed insanely well and has stayed evergreen for years, this one’s tail will be shorter and lumpier, but still there.

Wolverine will have secondary volume bumps driven by MCU X-Men marketing beats, holiday gifting, and new PS5 owners looking for high-budget graphics showcases (I’m looking at you, upgrading GTA 6 crowd).

But make no mistake, Wolverine will keep moving. The backlash was fast and hard, but that discourse will sail clean over the heads of the millions of more passive, mainstream players who make up the bulk of this audience. Those folks’ll buy Wolverine for the brand, get it for Christmas, and never once open Reddit to find out they were supposed to be angry.

Wolverine will keep selling, just not at Spider-Man heights. Spidey’s been evergreen. Wolverine will be more ever-yellow.

I’ll see myself out...

This might be the realest thing I've read on the internet in a long time

Good news for Insomniac. Assuming those 3rd party estimates are accurate.

Hope everyone who bought it gets everything they hoped for

Game looks really bad, sadly.

It could sell a billion copies. I will never begrudge any companies ability to make money.

I think Taylor Swift is god awful. . .but she is one of the best selling artists in world history. Does that make her one of the greatest musicians in history? On par with The Beatles? Michael Jackson? Led Zeppelin?

If you think so, fine. I don't begrudge other's opinions. But I an many other strongly disagree

Ah, so this is a jab. Thought this was serious

This is another game that, like Veilguard and AC: Shadows before it, will sell well. . .but then half the studio gets laid off and a year later everyone that glazed it will admit it was booty

Online discourse being what it is, a game is either life changing or a steaming pile of horse shite. There is no in between.

Case in point

Most of the online catfight is around Wolverine being 6/10

Not 1/10, 6/10

Most streamers have it around there

Metacritic users are 6.6/10

Critics are 77/100

All that means is decent game, not great, not bad

I personally think it bad. . .for what I like in games. In a linear narrative game, I need good writing, This does not have that.

All the other nonsense I could forgive. Tranny looking chicks, handholding, et al.

If this had great writing, I would be in. This has Veilguard level HR writing.

Logan spends every non-combat cutscene talking about his feelings (unless there are some I haven't seen, which is probable).

The only character who bothers me in Sabretooth. For some reason they made him sound like a Reddit poster.

I beat the game. It was fine. 7/10 experience.

There was enemy variety. Mostly humanoid, but each faction had unique enemies and the combat had some degree of variety.

Combat had some level of depth, but we aren't talking a ninja gaiden or a sekiro level combat system. You can likely get lucky with dodging and mashing square but there is more depth if you want it.

The story was fine. I don't know that I enjoyed every choice made and I think I prefer the movies/comics in terms of how the world is set up, but I didn't find anything appalling here. It seems like it serves as an origin point for mutants. Essex was trying to force mutants out into the open and I think it sets the stage for a larger mutant presence in this world. The way they handled Jean and how she factors into Logan's life is very different than what we have seen before.

Most of the nitpicks are largely superficial. weird facial animations being clipped and made fun of. single lines of dialogue being taken out of context. The motorcycle sections were bad and deserve mockery, but most of the other 'critiques' were overblown.

Anybody universally praising this as excellent and anyone trashing it as a 3/10 disaster are clowns. full stop. so tired of culture war/impotent nerd rage over dumb shite. Just feels so insincere. The internet and social media feed off of outrage, so everyone's looking for a hot take. Exhausting.

It was a fine albeit average comic book action game.

put that on Twitter, and you are a NAZI, XBOT, SONY HATER, etc. Probably MAGA, or some such.

Gaming discourse is so crazy right now.

I've seen all the cutscenes. The story is dumb, and Wolverine is soft, affable, friendly, cheerful, and constantly talking about his feelings.

Now I have NO idea if modern comics have made Logan soy af. But no fan of Wolverine vibes with that portrayal.

Jean was portrayed fine. Still looks trans to me.

Sabretooth actually behaves more as what Wolverine should have been.

Sinister is an idiot, and does idiotic things. .when shite falls apart, ge says it is part of his plan. He is basically Disney's Thrawn.

Overall the story is pretty dumb, uninspired, and forgettable.

Only decent moment was Jean frying death outta Logan, and wiping his brain.

Writing was just bad. Not "woke" or anything. Just bad, and a weak portrayal of Logan.

Perhaps I have a low opinion of comics.

Dumb story feels perfectly in line with a comic plot. So therefore, I award it with “fine”. Acceptable. It met my expectation.

It’s not amazing. It’s not breath taking. It’s not a tour de force. It’s fine.

Now I preface this to say, I stopped reading X-Men shortly after AoA and Onslaught.

Kept reading Wolverine, until it was not Logan, and Old Man Logan.

It is my understanding that the X-Men are now very gay-coded, and are supposed to represent the LGBT struggle. Wolverine is supposedly bisexual, and in a throuple.

So maybe his soy portrayal in the game is consistent with the modern books?

Should be noted that the modern Xmen comic sales are largely tragic, and they are looking to reboot them to try to win back old fans.

ETA: accidentally submitted halfway through

Think that most popular comics got overrun with heavy handed social justic themes, but I haven't purchased a comic since the 90's so I wouldn't know.

I think X-Men was left out in the cold whenever the fox movies fell out of favor and the Marvel studios films became red hot. X-Men has always felt like a second fiddle marvel outfit ever since.

I consider all comics to be mostly shlock at the end of the day. it's nice when you can elevate it to something greater because some of the storylines are cool when done well, but I rarely go into it with high expectations so I suppose a mid Wolverine adaptation didn't rankle me too much.

So long as they don't go hyper heavy handed into social justice and can keep the story somewhat grounded in the subject matter at hand, I'm largely fine.

I just expect a dark and gritty Wolverine. Stoic and silent one minute, rage and blind violence the next

I don't think Insomniac was ever going to be the studio to deliver that.

Really, ever since Hugh Jackman got cast as Wolverine, the characterization has been muddled. Even if they say otherwise, most audiences tend to prefer charisma and physical attractiveness. Just add a dash of mean spirited and that's the best they can do.

And studios (game, movie, or otherwise) seem to prefer safe or marketable over staying true to character.

It seems like most modern writers have a hard time letting people sit with anything unpleasant. I see it play out quite often whenever you're placed in the role of 'villain' or even someone who's mildly unpleasant, there is some contrivance to make the character good or they find their conscience or whatever. just a trend that I've picked up on.

which is why I said i was skeptical of the writing when this was announced.

I said the entire game style was uninspired.

A Wolverine game should be more hack-and-slash like DmC or Nier. Or maybe a stalking/detective game like Arkham.

This game feels like generic linear GoW, with vague Assassin's Creed mechanics added contextually.

Not terrible, but not what it should have been.

These are all druthers I have been saying from the beginning. And all just my personal opinion.

Others disagree, and that is fine.

I would rather a Capcom version of Wolverine, gameplay-wise. And get Claremont or Millar to write it, rather than people who think brothers should yearn for each other.

Well put. Huge blown-out budgets also make "safe and inoffensive" the order of the day.

And having Sweet Baby Inc in any capacity is going to make your game worse.

I bet we find out they were responsible for Mystique and Tyger. Had SBI written all over it.

Man it’s crazy to me that we have this long arse thread on Wolverine, but nothing on the new Onimusha. To me, that game is what Wolverine should’ve been in every way.

Story was a lot of fun with an amazing villain. Combat was way better than anything I saw from Wolverine. The women were actually easy on the eyes. The graphics were great with what I felt was top tier face capture for emotions and expressions.

I’d encourage anyone here who passed on Wolverine to go check it out
