Waking up and getting Ocarina of Time. Best year ever.
Turning that on to that title menu for the first time as an 8 year old...

Still hasn't been topped. There is a primal chemical reaction in my brain when I hear that menu music to this day. I'll never forget the sense of wonder I got.

Nostalgia is powerful.

I took my kid's raspberry pi, he no longer used it, and loaded it with retropie. Its fun but the 8bitduo controllers, which are awesome controllers, are not the controllers you used to play the games originally. The feel, the lag - it's not the same.

The NES/SNES/N64 stuff with the Switch is pretty good. It's a limited selection but has most of the good stuff.

I just started listening to a podcast called "Remember the Game?". Canadian Comedian guy has about 250 episodes. I listen to the episodes of the games I played. His accent is annoying, but his show is decent IMO.

My man cave is much more likely to be filled with 80s/90s video game and pop culture nostalgia then any sports team. I've pondered if plex can just rotate the simpsons, king of the hill, Nickelodeon circa 90s, TMNT, etc. Just have a TV in that room dedicated to replaying those things next to the TV where I play old games.

I was just thinking the other day - what was better than getting home from middle school and loading up Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, OoT, Wave Racer or even random terrible games like Turok or Star Wars Episode I Racer.

This right here. Core memory.
Gaming magazines were still in style. I got stuck on Ocarina of Time and did not get unstuck until I came across a guide in a magazine in some retail store that probably doesn't exist anymore

pretty much all my gaming systems from the Super NES, N64, original Xbox, to the xbox 360 and all of my game boys we given to me as christmas presents... My cousins would get the segas and the playstations and we would just just go between each others houses

And spent the entire holiday - like 100 hours - entering basic code from a book

To play something like this...

It was magical

How about waking up on Christmas break to play Super Mario Bros 3. That was a good time.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I had to beg my mom for a guide to get out of the water temple.

I don’t have the time I used to now that I have kids. I still get some in a few hours a week after they go to sleep but the game nights until 2-3 am are long gone

My daughter is starting to pay attention to games like Mario because they have bright colors. They have no choice but to be into video games when they are older

I literally cannot stay up until 2-3 AM anymore. At least not without a load of coffee

I can’t even do it with coffee. The only time I’ve managed to stay up that late anymore is if all my buddies are playing together and that happens once every 3 months if we lucky.

Change those games to gold cartridge Zelda and Blaster Master and I’m right there with you.

Y'all are pups.

I remember spending an entire summer mowing lawns saving up to get my Super Nintendo as soon as it released. Got completely stiffed three times by people who refused to pay me because I didn't rake and bag up the massive corn rows of clippings after push-mowing their entire 2 foot tall grass yards. Good times.

ActRaiser and F-Zero are still two of my favorite games.

My big christmas gaming memories seemed to revolve around the PS1. I still remember coming downstairs to the console that Santa left in I wanna say 1997. Cool boarders 2 and street fighter ex + alpha were my first games that came with it. Also fond Christmas memories of ape escape, Tony hawk, and the WWF game with Steve austin on the cover. Good times

My favorite xmas memory was in 2018 when I got my first xbox. I was like ten/eleven or so. I downloaded fortnite and played for hours.

Fast forward to DK Country Tropical Freeze, which also looks amazing and is also the hardest platformer I’ve ever played and it’s not particularly close. Gave up about halfway through I’m guessing

DK has always been for the true soldiers
