In DEFENSE of the Wii U - Why it Was Good for Nintendo and the Switch

A video essay by Clean Prince:

Though the WiiU was a massive failure, the things Nintendo learned and started during the WiiU days helped create what we are seeing on the Switch today.
PS: I'm soooo glad that nerdwriter1 brought video essays to the mainstream a few years ago, well done video essays are very entertaining imo

I think 10 years from now the Nintendo Wii U will be looked at how we look back at the Dreamcast.
Everyone will claim to have had one, and everyone will claim it was their favorite machine of the generation.

The Wii U’s core library was INSANE. But its controls were lacking and the 3rd parry support was garbage.
If it had the 3rd party support of PS3/4, it would probably have been considered one of the greatest consoles of all time even with the unsavory controls.

I agree with this.
It will be considered a beautiful disaster. Great console, great controls, great library. Just a failure in the market.

Nintendo's biggest mistake was naming it Wii U instead of something totally different. Everyone thought it was just a Wii with a new controller

The Dreamcast had an insane library for its short life. It also came with good controllers, which the Wii U did not.
The Wii U had a better library than the PS4/XBONE in its first 2yrs but I wouldn't say we will think of it like the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was actually a good console from graphical power, good controls and an awesome library.

Yep. Awesome 1st party lineup.

Nah.. it was that stupid controller with its limited range.
It would have been cool if it played games inside another room from the main unit.

I did have a dreamcast, and it was way ahead of its time. Loved me some 1st person NFL 2K.

That's a very fair case. The Wii U had great innovation that laid the groundwork for the Switch, which I'll be surprised by the end if it doesn't sell Wii numbers if not more. It was a console both ahead and behind its time. Shitty marketing is at least responsible for say 10 million plus consoles not being sold. But like the GameCube, it's clear they learned their lesson from it.
If the graphics are compatible with the Switch (say the recent South Park game or Cuphead), then I see no reason why they wouldn't immediately develop a port simply due to the Switch being portable. A portable and home console all in one is something Sony and Microsoft won't be able to compete with due to their extreme focus on the online experience. They're ducks in the water once airplane mode is in effect. Nintendo never lost sight of having fun with friends in person, and you have to respect them for that. Really bring over multiple Wii U games to the Switch with upgrades, and it will completely make up for the Wii U.
The Wii U is the greatest disaster in video game history.

It was my favorite. As a matter of fact, I still occassionally take it out to play a few games. Me and my brother still play marvel vs. capcom 2 on it. I also still play sword of the beserk, ready 2 rumble, and skies of acadia on it.

The biggest problem with the Wii U was the price never seemed to come down to a price point that I wanted one bad enough. I really want a Nintendo for a hand full of games and I am not willing to pay for a premium console to get them. With PS4 and XBOne sitting there at the same price, which one do you go for?

I feel like people are really reaching with this one. A console with single digit games worth playing is hardly worthy of praise or merit.

Wii U will go down as a step above the Virtual Boy and that's it.
Basically all the good games from it have been ported over to the Switch anyways.

It appears that you missed the point. It's painfully obvious that Nintendo used the WiiU as a stepping stone to the Switch. Maybe not intentionally, but they took everything that they learned from the U, improved upon it, and now we have the Switch. You can downplay it all you want...

Troll all you want. The only lesson that was learned from Nintendo is that if you're going to make a tablet, you have to make it slimmer and not ugly as sin.

I just compare it to an operating system like Windows ME...in defense of Windows ME it was a great stepping stone for Microsoft and specifically its successor, Windows 7.
