It appears that you missed the point. It's painfully obvious that Nintendo used the WiiU as a stepping stone to the Switch. Maybe not intentionally

maybe?

It seems obvious but the functionality was different

Dual screen gaming versus the switch which is console gaming anywhere anytime

I suspect the feedback they got from Wii U put them on the path to the switch. I only got a Wii U a couple of years ago and the first thing that stuck out was I could play wind waker downstairs without occupying the tv and ignoring my wife or in bed, but the range limitation was sometimes quite annoying

The switch takes that concept and goes balls to the wall. The switch is easily my favorite console of the past 15 years

I think it did but it was an accident. They were all in on dual screen console gaming as a gimmick and unwittingly stumbled upon the idea of a console that you can play on your tv or handheld anywhere

yeah, maybe. I personally have no clue what their development meetings were like and what discussions were had regarding their hardware 5-6 years ago.

They did plenty of advertising for the WiiU about how you could transfer the main display to the game pad and free up the TV for someone else to use. The idea was definitely there even with the WiiU to have the ability to detach your console gaming experience from the TV.

but it seemed secondary. the tutorial shows you this as well, but they emphasized the dual screen like the other idea was just a perk.

I said this about the switch from the beginning...this is the first Nintendo console where the gimmick was more than just a gimmick. I've played south park on ps4 since I've had the switch and when my wife was out of town.

even then it bothered me that it wasn't as quick and easy to start using as the switch and that I couldn't take it anywhere.
