Games that were criticized at the time but remembered fondly now

I distinctly remember Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 being criticized back in the day for it essentially being "more of the same." Tony Hawk 4 on the other hand was widely praised for being a departure from what came before.

These days, it feels like Pro Skater 3 is, for many people, the best in the franchise and Tony Hawk 4 is kind of forgotten.

Personally, I think Underground 1 was the series peak.

Likewise Jedi Academy was criticized for doing away with series protagonist Kyle Katarn and eschewing the story-based structure for a nearly unrelated series of missions.

These days, while Jedi Knight is still looked upon fondly, most people will jump straight to Jedi Academy as you get a light saber from the beginning as opposed to slogging through half a game of meh FPS mechanics. Likewise, the mission-based structure seems to be just what people want from the series as it fits the theme of "Jedi Simulator" better than anything that has come before or after.

FF13

That game still has better graphics than like half the stuff released on ps5 and it’s a very fun game that imo got unfairly got slapped as a hallway simulator.

It is true the first 10 chapters are all extremely linear but then when you get to pulse you have an entire open world with 100 optional monsters fights to do, titans trials, super bosses, etc

The game gets incredibly punishing if you don’t at least do the first 15 monster missions before moving on from pulse

I think that falls more under the catagory of “games you like that nobody else does”

I don’t think anybody looks back on FF13 today and has changed their mind about it. The graphics are great though.

I don’t think it was unfair to label it that when 10 out of 13 or however many chapters were exactly that.

By the time I got to pulse I was tired of the game. I did some of the stuff there but I put it down and to this day have not had the desire to go back to it. It’s the only one since 7 was released that I never cared to finish

Cyberpunk due to the issues at launch.

I’d argue it’s in an elite tier now given Phantom Liberty and the fixes they made.

I really enjoy the 13 trilogy.

It’s obviously not in the same stratosphere of 6-10. It is better than 12 and 15 though easily imo. 16 is just way too different to compare them too imo

I’d rank FF something like
10
tactics
6
7
9
13 13-2 LR
16
8
12
15*

15 had so muh potential though

RDR2 was criticized as “not fun” when released.

The problem wasn’t the level design or fighting.

The characters sucked hard.

This was actually a hot take when it came out. Everyone had crowned it game of the century but there were a few people who pointed out "it's not fun to actually PLAY this game".

I remember Dan Ryckert nominating it for "Most Disappointing Game" that year in the Giant Bomb GOTY discussions. Everyone thought he was nuts since it was probably a shoe in for game of the year, but he made his case...everything about this game is great except the absolute horrid mechanics, it made him stop playing it at some point, and I think RDR2 won that category.

I think it worked for RDR2 because you felt immersed in the setting. I do not want to see GTA like that.

Hope is I agree in FF13 the single worst character in the series history

In 13-2 he is age up to around Sarah’s age and is way way better

It doesn't help the first 5-10 hours are painfully slow.

And "fun" isn't exactly an adjective that's used to describe it much even to this day.

It's a masterpiece but not exactly fun in the traditional video game sense, especially until it fully opens up.

When Windwaker first came out loads of people lampooned the cell shaded art style. Today that’s one of its most praised characteristics (I thought then and do now that the game feels a bit empty and short, though).

I'll add Kingdom Come Deliverance. I think when it first came out it was pretty janky and people weren't ready for how realistic of an RPG it was and it caused them to give up on it pretty early. It seems like it has a pretty big following now amongst RPG fans and the sequel was super highly regarded last year, even being considered GOTY by some.

I actually started up KCD1 a couple weeks ago, it was only sale for $6. Enjoying it so far but it is a steep learning curve. Feel like it will definitely take the full 3 months before GTA comes out to complete it, if im lucky.
