re: Your're going to a chain steak house. Your choices: Longhorn, Outback, or TX Roadhouse

I don't like Longhorn. Their food is cooked in a way that I don't like. Most of their steaks are cooked on a grill the way they do at McDonalds. Only one kind of steak is cooked on an open flame. I once ordered the baby back ribs and I was very disappointed. The ribs were not cooked on an open flame. The ribs were tender but they didn't have the flavor of ribs. They tasted like they were boiled until tender and covered with BBQ sauce. They didn't have the flavor of good baby backs. The only thing that was good was the baked potato and the mac and cheese. When I lived in Montgomery, my friend enjoys eating at Longhorns so I was the one that ate there with him. The food isn't bad but I like steaks that are cooked over an open flame. When I moved back home two years ago my neighbor asked me to go to Longhorns for lunch. We went to the one in Denham and it was exactly the same as the one in Montgomery. TBH, I really enjoy their shrimp that is cooked in a butter sauce. I really enjoyed Western Sizzler. Their steaks were better than what you get at Longhorn.

A few years ago, I frequently would go to the Outback when I worked in Hattiesburg. Good steak. Went to the Longhorn in Lafayette about a year ago and their steak was surprisingly good.

This.
If you can't afford to take him to a decent place for his first filet then just grill a good choice or prime one from Costco instead of those shite steakhouses.

I avoid chain steakhouses like the plague…. Either nice steak place or I’ll cook it at home. Once you’re able to cook a nice steak, you look at steakhouses differently.
With that said, all chain steakhouses are created differently. One might be great in one city, and absolute garbage the next. I’d ask locals maybe. I get it though… it’s either ribeyes or tri tip in this home

1. Texas Roadhouse - a dang fine meal for the price
2. Outback - Ok but a step below Texas Roadhouse
3. Longhorn - I couldn't even tell you the last time I went to one

Last time I went to outback I’d rather have been lost in the actual outback. Everything was overcooked and undersized.

Texas roadhouse and get a medium rare cheeseburger, they were pretty good 10 years ago.
If you want a good steak for the boy, find a good butcher, buy a couple filet, sear them rare in a cast iron skillet and cook for maybe 3-4 minutes at 400 in your oven. Will be better than most restaurants, certainly better than any of the chains.
Also could try this grill-chimney method from Alton Brown. My dad and I do this every summer a few times, would be a fun father-son activity for yall.

But bottom line there are a lot of ways for you to get your son a killer filet without going to a crappy chain. That's part of a father's wisdom - "no steak at all is better than a mediocre chain restaurant steak".

I had a rare filet at Texas Roadhouse in Orlando and spent the next day either laying on the bathroom floor or sitting on the toilet.
This is like complaining about gas station sushi not sitting right with you

Maybe it's just me, but unless they totally f' it up, I find little variation in the filet as a steak.

I do think Longhorn is the best quality of the three, but I also really like Texas Roadhouse and go there way more often. They probably have the best value meal of all chain restaurants
ETA: apparently it varies significantly
Our Outback is terrible

Outback. Start with Coconut Shrimp for the App. Alice Springs Chicken with a Sweet Potato for an entree. Highly underrated.
F that! If I were to subject myself to Outback's shite quality steaks, I would at least treat myself to a Blooming Onion for an app.

Why no Saltgrass as an option?
