I was in Pitt all week for work and for the second time tried that Primanti's Pittsburger. Those folks are really obsessed with it, and it kind of sucks. The burgers are like really low-rent grade school cafeteria patties.

I ate there, but had no idea the burger was what to get. I ordered some Italian sandwich. I didn’t care for the fries in it, so just scraped them off.

I did think it was pretty overrated. Fries were nothing special, but the bread they served the sandwich in was good.

I've never been there, but I've never heard anything really good about it from ANYONE who has. It doesn't look good, I know that.

Is this the worst thing that would be considered a particular city's 'signature food'? Maybe Cincinnati Skyline Chili could give it competition?

Anything else?

I ate at the one in Ft. Lauderdale years ago and it was nothing special.

I would stick to pierogis and various forms of meatballs instead :)

I don't care for the burger but still overall it's not the best place. Primanti Bros is just the only thing 'unique' to this area. Pittsburgh is a town where vinegar is considered a seasoning- the local food sucks. There are good restaurants here, but none of them serve "Pittsburgh food"

I don't think anyone who lives there is "obsessed" with it. I'm from Pittsburgh, and I agree that the sandwiches are pretty mediocre and bland, especially to a Louisiana palate. Some sort of sauce, similar to a Cane's sauce, would put it over the top.

If I want a killer sandwich, I go to Fatheads on the South Side. Had you posted prior to your trip, I could've given you some solid recs.

The TRUE Pittsburgh sandwich is the Devonshire. Union Grill makes a good one, as does Lemont, where it originated.

I disagree.

Pierogies and golabki and other Polish delicacies, the aforementioned Devonshire, Ohio Valley-style pizza (Beto's or Fire Station in Ambridge), hoagies, pepperoni rolls... there's plenty of good stuff that's not hard to find. Fiori''s is my favorite pizza place, anywhere. I lived in Pittsburgh for many, many years and never once used vinegar as a seasoning. The only thing vinegar was used for was cole slaw, which differs from the southern version.

Tasted like something I made in the dorm on a hot plate. Can't believe they champion that mess as some sort of signature dish for the city.

We go to the one in York Pa every few months. It's OK and they have a wide menu with pizza, burgers, wings and drinks. It's OK for someone staying in a hotel for a week.

Yeah, they bake the crust with the sauce on it, and then when it comes out, they put the cheese (and other toppings) on. Sounds gross, looks crappy, but it's actually very good. My favorite is found at the DiCarlos franchise throughout the Ohio Valley.

Because it has bacon that makes it a breakfast sandwich?

Has nothing to do with breakfast, and it's fricking delicious

Just once I'd love one of those food network shows to call out famous local stuff that sucks. But everything has to be amazing otherwise they wouldn't let these people film.

There may be a way to pull it off though. Maybe hide the name of the place and film undercover or something, but I'd watch it because I would know they were gonna be honest.

I guess if you watch DDD enough you can tell when he doesn't love something but I want "here's why it sucks".
