Why is it that nice places always have a crappy beer selection?

Country clubs, nice restaurants, suites at a game. Seems like majority of these places always have a crap beer selection. Why is that?

Because the people that go to those places don’t want craft beer.

I'm more interested in the wine list. If there is a sommelier, I almost always accept their suggestions.

Or I get a Miller Lite in the bottle.

How hard is it to feature one (ONE!) local IPA, lager, sour, stout? Every city has at least one good brewery.

Coors
Coors Light
Miller
Miller Lite
Budweiser
Budweiser Light
Busch
Busch Light

Cringe at these selections and puke emoji

They don't sell. Be surprised at what sells in high end restaurants , Michelob ultra, Bud light , Miller lite. Etc...Even the wine is mostly name recognizable. The wines that guests are uncomfortable pronouncing, forget it. If a restaurant has a Som, definitely ask for him/ her.

Ruth's Chris comes to mind here

Very solid wine selection but beer selection is super weak

It’s almost like their clientele consists of rich old white people that do not give a crap about craft beer.

It's not just those high end places. Ever check out what people are drinking at the Chimes or Walk-Ons with all of those craft beers they carry?

Never have I ever would have thought a man in America would whine over having these beers as a choice. How soft are men now that they are whining over this? Good grief. Order a freakin beer and drink it you wuss.

Trendy sort of “nice” places usually have a small handful of decent craft beer choices. Older school “nice” places, not so much usually. They typically still assume you’re going to drink wine with dinner.

This is the answer. I know a few restaurants that try to stock something local, but it doesn't sell. In the end, they have a 3/4 keg of something that's just taking up space.

Owning a restaurant, any business really, is about making a profit. Mich ultra sells and sells fast.

Not only volume of sales but also profit margin. Markup on cocktails and wine seem to outpace that of beer

This.

If you are going to newer nice restaurants they will usually have a nice beer list.

If you are going to old school places or chains, they won't.

I was at harrahs saturday. Beer & liquor selection was absolute trash. I just assume their corporate controls the buying

For suites at a game, same thing. Likely just contracted out.

I get smaller places. You have to know your clientele. You can waste money on beer that will go bad
