IF you do, what does it do? I have a pot of beans that has been cooking all day and I am thinking about adding some. I feel like I have read on here that it makes them creamier

I've never used butter. They're supposed to get creamy with the length of time they cooked and the melting of the fat in the ham hock that is cooked along with them.

I have never had a problem with the consistency, I was just wondering what it does.

By blend I meant throw some in the Cuisinart in the last 15 minutes and pulse it a few times, then add back to the pot.

at the very end, about 10-15 min before service, turn down the fire and add a full stick of butter, just let it melt and blend, dont bring it back to a boil

No. I don't care for the taste of butter in my red beans.

I mashed mine when I got home earlier. After reading this thread I said, "Why not?" and threw in some butter. I never have before, but there's a first time for everything.

Lard when cooking FTW ! 2 Tablespoons per pound of beans, you'll get that creamy rich taste you're looking for.
