Now I've eaten red beans at school every Monday, make a damn good pot of red and white beans, usually with smoked hocks and sausage. But I can't remember ever having it with shrimp. How popular is this dish? How have I never encountered it?

What I can gather basically, when beans are done add small to medium shrimp. probably hot enough to cook shrimp thru by taking off heat and covering for 10 minutes.

I’ve seen it in the Chalmette area and always considered it a regional thing.

Never had it in my life and never knew it was a thing until yesterday. I am NOT gonna knock it because I would love to try it!

I made white beans and shrimp a few weeks back and it was delicious!

I am not from Chalmette, I just thought it sounded good so I googled a couple of recipes.

shrimp is like bacon, it goes with anything and gives good flavor to it. just put it in after its done cooking, shrimp only needs a minute or two in a pot of hot beans and its done

my only rule is keep beef and seafood separate since they change each others flavors. sausage and seafood is fine but dont put shrimp in a beef sauce picante or its kinda lost and wasted

It’s been a thing for me for the last 15 years or so.
I grew up in St Mary parish and we didn’t do this dish, but I had it at a restaurant in Metairie and fell in love with it.
Been my way of doing white beans since.

Pairs exceptionally well.

Great responses, all. It does sound like a great addition to some good smoky white beans. Gonna try it this week, with some cornbread, of course.

I put smoked and/or cajun sausage in with my white beans from the jump. Shrimp would go in right when you cut the burner off for a few minutes.

Had it once about 10 years ago and it's a surprisingly good combination. I thought it sounded like an odd pairing before trying it but somehow it works.
