Let me start and say that I don’t know much about the different types of whiskey. Tried it a few times mixed and straight when I went out with some people at restaurants. Never paid attention to which type/brand I was trying.I got a family get together this week and I’m looking to buy a bottle. I’ve been looking online and I’m trying to decide on bourbon or rye. I would like something that I might could sip or mix. Also, looking to spend no more than $50 on a bottle. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Woodford Reserve is my go to recommendation for a beginner. Cheap, not too much proof, and is great by itself.

Wild Turkey 101 if you want something with slightly more proof.

Knob Creek, Elijah Craig, Four Roses. These are all good to sip just over ice, but you don't feel guilty if you make a drink with them. All in the $30 range. There's a bunch more, but I usually have no trouble finding these.

I'm not a bourbon nut by any means. But I have all three in my bar.

Personally, I prefer rye over bourbon. Especially in an old fashioned. Elijah Craig makes a good rye for $30 (although it is BARELY a rye whiskey). IMO, Knob Creek has more "spice". Any one tried 1776 rye? I thought about picking that up for the holidays

I like baby Saz in an old fashioned.

Knob Creek and Buffalo Trace are good to start

Gentleman Jack is also delicious with a splash of coke. Some will argue its not bourbon, but who really cares.

I'll echo Russell's Reserve 10 if you go bourbon. Not too high on proof for sipping but enough going on with it to not get lost in a cocktail.

For rye I'm a big fan of the Old Forester 100 proof rye, bonus is that if it's for a get together it's a liter bottle instead of a fifth.

Jefferson's was one of the first bourbons that I genuinely "got it" as opposed to just drinking and saying "well it's whiskey and I like how it makes me feel". It's a light drinking bourbon, my summer time go to for when I don't want high proof sweats on the back porch.

Store picks of Sazerac are also excellent and priced sub $20 depending on where you're at. Right now a Zuppardos store pick for $18 has a big lead on anything else I've tried this year on a bang for your buck basis.

Elijah Craig rye is very solid for a ~$30 bottle.

Johnny Drum Private Stock or Four Roses Single Barrel are good for ~$40.

Old Forester 1910 is roughly $50 (maybe a few bucks over) and would be good for a beginner, too.

Speaking of rye, any thoughts on High West Double Rye, Bulleit Eye, or Pendleton?

High West Double Rye will be more complex as it blends a younger and older rye. Bulleit Rye is a go to well bourbon in cocktail bars I trust. I haven't had Pendelton, but would add Rittenhouse Rye to good ryes in your price range.

As far as the difference between rye and bourbon, think about bread. Rye bread is more earthy/spicy/funky than corn bread or wheat bread. Most American whiskeys contain a combination of corn, malted barley, and either rye or wheat (a few have both). Bourbon is required to be at least 51% corn, but most also include some rye and some barley. Most cocktails include some sweetener which matches well with a spicy/funky rye. Most beginners, however, don't just go straight into drinking rye straight/neat. Most will start with a lower proof, lower rye content bourbon.

Thanks for the breakdown. I think with whatever I get I will be mixing it with Coke or something else.

In that case just buy some Jack Daniels. Don't waste money on anything decent to mix it with Coke
