I make a great Caesar's Salad complete with homemade dressing and croutons.
As far as a normal mixed salad, it's romaine lettuce, sliced cucumber, thin sliced celery and carrots and bite sized pieces of fresh tomatoes.
Additional stuff I like to add are cut up artichoke hearts in oil, salad olives or black olives, finely cut up fresh parsley and sweet basil from the garden.
Refrigerate until needed and I use dressings I make instead of stuff bought from a store. Then salt and pepper to taste and enjoy.

I have used this recipe several times and it is always a hit. I use just one head of lettuce.

Our nightly salad usually consists of romaine/green/red leaf lettuce, cherry tomato, Avacado, cucumber, hearts of palm, carrots, honey goat cheese and some sort of vinaigrette.
We will also throw in bell pepper, red onion or broccoli/cauliflower if there is any laying around.

I like Darla's post. Pretty well the same as my favorites. We eat a lot of salad and I could bore you guys to tears with photos. No two would be the same, but all hit the spot the night we had them.
Since no one else has posted it, iceberg lettuce, chilled boiled shrimp, homemade thousand island dressing, tomato wedges. Best way I know to get rid of leftover boiled shrimp.

I like a hearty, more old school type of salad.
A caesar salad with homemade dressing that you put just before serving. A super cold wedge salad with lots of bacon/lardons on it. A homemade ranch/cheddar/bacon type salad. A chopped salad with a good vinaigrette and Italian meats.

I like a salad with mostly green romaine. Too many of the white crunchy parts kinda ruin it for me.
I’m the opposite. Give me all the crunchy bits. Same goes for green onions, give me the white crunchy parts.
The other big must have for a salad is to put a metal bowl in the freezer before preparing salad and put serving plates in freezer as well. I want the salad to stay ice cold. Also love adding sunflower seeds.

Get a salad spinner. OXO makes a good one
Never could recreate my grandmother's salads until I remembered she always used the salad spinner.

Romaine
Tomato
Avocado
Julienned red bell/red onion
Toasted sliced almonds
Cucumber
Shredded carrot
Jalapenos
Shredded parm or feta
Vinaigrette of some sort
Rotini pasta sometimes
Usually chicken
I usually do some combo of these ingredients and I certainly have done all of them before.

quote:I worked at a fancy 4 star restaurant in HS and after I was promoted from busboy to salad chef I was taught to "tear the lettuce" by hand, not cut it. When I asked the owner why he said the hand torn pieces had better flavor because the tearing exposed more edges of the lettuce.
Cut your own lettuce
I made some bad arse specialty salads too. I hand made Caesar at the table with anchovies, fresh garlic, lemon, olive oil, dry mustard and egg yolks and then tossed into baby romaine and then plated and topped with Parmigiano Reggiano and croutons is an amazing dish. Made big tips!!

Get a good vegetable spinner, wash your lettuce and spin all the water off in the vegetable spinner, makes a big difference in how well the dressing sticks to the lettuce.

Y’all have convinced me. Salad spinner on order from Amazon.

Mixed greens
Tomatoes with flavor
Red onion
Green pepper
Hard boiled egg slices
Good dressing (I prefer bleu cheese)
Those are the main things. I just like different textures and flavors. Carrots, peas, radishes, nuts, meat (steak), shredded cheese, are all good additions.

It was a game changer for us. I hated prepping lettuce for salad, but we love to eat it. My husband maligned the salad spinner as a “useless gadget” until he used it. Really works.
As to the salad question…switch up the greens or use a variety. I generally include a crunch, a salty/tangy, a sweet, a bulk—protein, egg, cheese, and I have to have a sprinkle like croutons, tortilla strips, chow mein noodles, etc.

16 oz bag of salad mix sliced down the seems to open it up (using the packaging as the bowl)
1 pack of hormel pepperoni
1/2 bottle of peppercorn ranch dressing
1/4 bottle of Bacos chips
1/4 box of garlic and herb croutons.
Toss as well as possible without spilling onto table.
Enjoy!
