Schwegmann # 3 on Gentilly Blvd. You could drink a draft beer, get a hair cut, eat oysters, get your shoes repaired, etc. and then make your groceries while drinking another beer. RIP

The one on Labarre was just like that. They even had a beer stand in the back of the store, kinda like having one after 9 holes. The selection in Schwegmanns was incredible, every kind of produce, meats and seafood imaginable. I am not sure how they would measure up to todays standards, it was more like a bazaar in the 3rd world.

John Schwegmann was not a poor businessman, however his kids, John & Melissa were. They ran the chain into the ground after daddy was incapacitated.

The downfall of Schwegmann's was typical and often happens. They were successful and wanted to expand and they bought all of the bankrupt National Stores. This led them into bankruptcy.

Same thing with Godchaux's which bought bankrupt Robinson's Department stores all over Florida and it caused them to go bankrupt.

Same thing with Al Copeland and Popeyes when he bought the bankrupt Churchs Fried Chickens thus he went bankrupt or at least lost all of the Popeyes.

There is a reason all of these companies are bankrupt and I never can understand why someone else thinks they can do it better.

It is hurting Rouse's right now from buying the bankrupt Sav A Centers.

My favorite store is any HEB/Central Market/HEB Plus. They are taking it straight to Wal Mart in Texas and I'd put my money on them in that state.

The Sternbergs and Copelands made out like bandits, though.

I wouldn't really shed too many tears for either.

Not really. Not near what the corporations were worth originally. Copeland held onto his few Copelands restaurants and rebuilt his finances and image. Sternbergs had just been around for so long they had enough socked away and have helped Erich start Starmount Insurance.

Regardless of financial outcome they made poor business decisions that led to the downfall of three good Louisiana based businesses that a lot of people depended on for not just merchandise but jobs.

According to capitalism, Wal Marks is the best grocery store. According to my memory, Schweggmans was awesome and for some reason I liked the SuperStore.

Publix is currently my favorite grocery store chain.
