I have one of the ancient ones I received for a wedding gift 43 years ago. That thing still runs like a champ and I have used the hell out of it. Couldn't tell you anything about the new ones.

Mrs Füt's (no pics) Kitchen Aid mixer was a gift from me around 30 years ago.
The mixer still works and looks wonderful, it gets used about 20-25 times per year.
Fun Fact: Katrina flood water got to the bottom 1/2 inch of it's base. Cleaned-up fine and has never looked back.

I bought one for my wife for our anniversary. She uses it all the time and loves it.

That's the best advice I can give you. It will not go over well as a gift to a SO. Trust me.
bullshite. My first gift to my fiancee was a Kitchenaid 5-qt mixer and she loves it. She loves to bake and cook which makes it a perfect gift, all the accessories make future birthday and Christmas shopping pretty easy.

Same, BUT I hate baking and won’t even do simple stuff if it involves flour and baking items. Most women seem to love baking more than cooking though. So I think it’s a good gift if someone likes that.
I gave mine to my brother totally unused after 2 years of having it..

Been having the Pro 500 Series (lift model) for probably 10 years or so.
Not only used for baking, but mashed potatoes, mix meat loaf, pulled pork (can’t mix too long or it will turn to mush),
With attachments, it’s a juicer, meat grinder and ice cream maker.
May have forgotten a few uses but all in all for me, it was well worth it.

you never give anything related to cooking or cleaning to a SO because it insults them.
bullshite.
Cooking is my #1 favorite thing to do on the planet. Everything I ask for is cooking related, or entertaining related (fancy serveware, barware, etc)
The only women who would be insulted by kitchenware are women who don’t enjoy cooking. In which case, I’m sure OP would know that about his wife.

I was so sad when they sent Lottie home. I almost cried at the reduction of eye candy.
Is it wrong to always root for the best looking one?

I bought mine an Ankarsrum the year before last
I think my wife would prefer the Kitchenaid and the extra $500
We use ours all the time, Mrs Sun God loves to bake. I’ve had to change the grease once in 10+ years but other than that it’s been rock solid.

I have the Professional 610 model and had a smaller, tilt-head model previously. They are both good mixers. The smaller unit was making a funny sound, but still worked when we replaced it with the larger unit. I ordered some new parts and grease and rebuilt it and my daughter is now using it. Was easy to rebuild and didn’t cost much for parts. That tilt-head mixer has been in regular use now for 32 years.
Depending on what you bake, the Pro 5 plus is probably adequate. The larger, more powerful models are necessary if making big batches of bread/pizza dough.
I find the Kitchenaid mixers and the attachments to be very useful. We use the pasta roller attachments and grater the most. The meat grinder not so much, but it does work.
We installed a swing-out lift in the base cabinet so it can be stored underneath and just swung/lifted into place. Needs a heavy duty mechanism, but works great. If you ever go that route, just make sure you get a mechanism that can handle the weight. There are light-weight mechanisms out there that won’t be up to the task.

We got one from my grandmother as a wedding gift. She got the same gift for all of her grandkids when they got married, and I know ours and my older sister's get used a ton. Let's just say the cooking gene must have skipped my little sister. We use it to mash potatoes, make dough, pudding, pie fillings, etc. I use it a good bit to break apart pork butts after I have smoked them and let them rest.
Does anyone know anything about maintenance and repairs? Ours is an older (got married in 2004) flip top 5 qt model, and lately the top seems to bounce around a little with a heavy load in there. I'd rather fix it than replace it for sentimental reasons, but not sure where to start. I'm pretty comfortable taking things apart if I need to.

We use ours, but a lot of people let them sit. I will say the bowl lift models as opposed to the bowl lock in base models are better for cleanup. That lock base collects all sorts of shite you can get out.

did she ask for one?
if this is your "big gift" for your sig other, id rethink the hell out of it
we use ours a ton for a lot of things. About to upgrade and get the larger one this christmas

Kitchen Aid was a spinoff of Hobart. They are known for their commercial mixers. What does this look like?
Posted on 12/4/20 at 6:25 am to jlovel7
If she really likes to cook and wants a nice mixer then you are probably good to go. Better be sure this is something she has been wanting. IF you are sure then you golden.
If she is expecting a non-appliance gift... you are venturing into dangerous territory.

Tilt head model is light duty. If she’s into baking bread, it won’t cut it.
Pro models with bowl lift are more durable. I used the hell out of one for 10-12 years before upgrading to an Ankarsrum.
The Ank is a beast with much higher capacity, but it is ideal for bread. It is less ideal for other things, esp heavy cookie doughs.
Accessories are great for either one. Get an extra bowl with a lid, and the BeaterBlade that scrapes as it rotates

Anyone know where i can get a replacement bowl?
Posted on 12/4/20 at 8:42 am to fatboydave
Bowls are not hard to find. Even Walmart carries extra bowls. Just make sure you know the type/size of the mixer, because the bowls are not all interchangeable.

I use mine probably 10 times a year. I love it. I have a food processor attachment that i use to dice massive loads of onions, celery, and bell pepper any time i need them. It makes quick work of that task.
