Total Wine sucks for scotch, and their marketing is a lie.

They push their own private labels of scotch, which they buy from surplus lots and label themselves, a la Costco. The difference is that Costco will sell it as their own Kirkland product. You know what it is, and you know it's gonna be good. Total Wine, on the other hand, will give it some Scottish-sounding name and put it in a nice cylinder box and make it look like something fancy and straight out of the Highlands. It's total bullshite.

For example, there is no distillery called Sheldaig.

There is no distillery called Grangestone.

There is no distillery called Glen Fohdry.

It's all a fricking scam. Yeah, maybe it's from Scotland, but don't think you're buying something real.

Same goes for Bourbon. Found a spot in Youngsville called Nu Nu's supermarket. Got a couple bottles of Four Roses single barrel select and Eagle Rare there last month.

It's a label. Most distilleries sell bulk product to whomever wants it for relabel. Like Celebrity Bourbons, most of them are trash high or low cut distilled and aged by someone else.

I only drink the finest Johnny Walker red label. Everything else is just cheap swill.

Grangestone is a bottler and blender based in Surrey, England, owned by William Grant & Sons (who produces Glenfiddich and Balvenie, among others) via a subsidiary.

This is very helpful.

SO and I can take various pictures tasting scotch in a public park (at least two towns over) and she can say on Instagram that we were touring Sheldaig, Grangestone, and Glen Fohdry distilleries in her typical attempt to give her friends FoMo.

Total Wine is awesome. Good prices, great selection. Better lay out than Specs. No one's forcing you to buy the other crap.

Someone's upset because they thought they were getting a good 29 year-old scotch for under a hundred bucks.

Looks real enough to me. It’s a real bottle filled with real scotch. All of the brands we buy have some embellishment or just flat out made up story about them. Relax. If it tastes good and is a good price who cares if it is a private label product from another distiller?

Their Boudin' pairs great with Eagle Rare.

I don't really believe in the concept of "bad scotch." I'll gladly drink Passport, for example.
