They don’t suck though. They are fantastic institutions that have served the community for generations.
They don’t exactly have the buying power to set prices in the way that TW does

the three tier system just seems archaic and unnecessary in today's world but I guess not enough people know or really care enough to question it.
distributors would still have their place but they wield way too much power currently. The system itself is what's hurting the smaller retailers, Costco and TW are just exploiting it.

I agree. The good ole boy system is firmly entrenched here. Same deal with Tesla and the car dealership racket.

I don’t care about Republic and Glazer distributors as they mainly distribute crap vin and booze. The small wine shops in my area seem to be kicking arse carrying stuff that total wine and more don’t sell, I guess smaller wine brokers aren’t concerned by TW. Love capitalism!

The mandating of the 3 tier system is just government intrusion, plain and simple. However, it's not going away, so everyone adapts. Pelican opened up and did a lot to help small breweries get their product out, without being stuck in shitty contracts with the likes of Mockler.

This. I think a new up and coming micro or nano brewery would do well not having to go through a distributor, and being able to load up kegs in the back of a pickup and bring them around town would be nice. However, once the brewery starts to grow, that becomes unsustainable, and unless you want to buy a fleet of trucks for distribution, that's when distributors are vital.

And no bullshite to get good bottles, if it’s there grab it, no reindeer games with allocations.
That alone is the reason I’m excited for it to open. Some of these stores want you to kiss their nuts to get a bottle. I used to go to one store and spent a lot there and I didn’t even know they had a rewards program.

As for Calandro's and any other smaller local grocers, I don't see how this was not inevitable. They had to see it coming, they've all also known that Total Wine was coming for over a year now, and just like in every single business sector you have know your landscape and adapt.
I also don't see Total Wine or Costo as bad guys. They help keep the market honest from what I can tell.
A lot of bourbon hunters/drinkers are pissed and they are talking about the allocations, I don't really get it. As others have stated a lot of the local stores have raffles that everybody new or old to their store has equal opportunity to win (ie they aren't rewarding their base customers)
No different than Home Depot or Lowe's, sure they probably did hurt some local hardware stores, but obviously the better ran local stores adjusted as necessary and are still standing
I don't want to see anybody out of a job, but "bigger & better" is a part of every business in America, every sector has to deal with it
I'll no doubt go to Total Wine but I for one damn ain't sure going to Siegen Lane at just any time of day to deal with that traffic, but I'll still be a regular at Hokus Pokus, Martin's and Harvest as well.

Yeah, I don't have much of an opinion in either direction about TW because I avoid Siegen like crazy so it won't really affect me.
All I've ever heard about TW was either my friends raving about it IRL, or the thread on the OT a while back where the majority said it sucked. So I have no idea.

a certain poster in this thread today was on FB dropping hints about placing allocated bottles in the store today and people were losing their fricking minds that they couldn't get over there right now.
can it be another liquor's turn to be all the rage now?

Went last night. made quite the wine haul. unbeatable prices

There’s been several comments along the lines of “if local businesses can’t compete with these prices, then it must suck to suck.”
I just want to clear up how places like Total Wine and Costco make their money alcohol wise. Local businesses literally can’t even try to compete. A local grocery store will mark up their costs 20-30%. That isn’t for 20-30% profits, that’s to cover overhead, labor, etc. and might profit 5-10% in the end. TW, Costco, etc mark popular items like Jucifer, Ghost in the Machine, etc. up 6%. Then they advertise those popular items at those crazy low prices to get you in the door.
They want your foot traffic. They want you to walk around, BECAUSE they want you to also notice their “low” prices on their private label products. The obvious example is the Kirkland brand at Costco. Those items with “low” prices is where they’re making their money. Those private label items are often as much as 80% profit for these companies. The frustrations that local companies might exhibit are real because it’s tough to compete with this business model.

They did. These are just butthurt posters who think they are entitled to bourbon because they buy a 6 pack of beer once/month from there and are making things up.
FWIW, I went to TW today to check it out. Their bourbon selection is nothing special. Like the local places everyone tries to hate on, you have to shop their to get a chance at buying the hard to get shite. You want Blantons from TW, you have to spend $2500 to earn 25,000 points to be eligible for drawings. You want to get Blantons at Calandro’s, Hokus Pokus, Alexander’s? You also have to be a regular shopper.
And like another poster said, TW is making their money on “label to store” brands. AKA the Kirkland wine.
ETA: they did have a good beer selection. It appears they have the buying power to get everything in the beer’s distribution profile, whereas your locals can’t buy up every single beer from zony mash, for example.

If everyone's prices are crashing, then it's not "overcharging". It's Total Wine artificially devaluing the market.
If I can find the same bottle of wine at Rouses for 24.99 and Zappardos for 16.99 don’t tell me Rouses isnt price gouging.
I like Total Wine. I like Martin’s. I like Zuppardos.
Rouses is overpriced and not a great selection. frick em.

what bottle of wine are you buying at Rouses that has a 50% markup? I’m not advocating for rouses for alcohol selection, but rouses is cheaper than most places and I call bullshite unless you just got something mismarked.

I can Tell you the exact bottle
Bonanza
Now I’ve seen that same bottle run all over the place and just bought it for 22.99 at Calandros in BR. But Rouses is still the highest. Zappardos the lowest. I’ve seen it for 19.99 at Calvin’s in BR.
(My wife has been pregnant and I don’t like drinking alone, so not I just Price shop)
