the lunches he got at Cochon he could have gotten them better at 3 or 4 gas stations in lafayette
Oh damn! Laying down the gauntlet.
I have to admit I know nothing about the place from first hand experience. I have not bee home in a couple of years, but I am planning a trip down in April and was thinking of giving it a try.

It's a really good restaurant and definitely worth a visit. The gas station quips that come out, any time the place is discussed here, are just sheer silliness. However, the incessant over-fawning it gets from national media runs a close second in the silliness department.
Again, I'd love to know who Link's press man is. Hope the dude (or gal) is well compensated.

Disclaimer: I've never been to Lafayette location. However, if it's half as good as the one in New Orleans then it would be one of the better restaurants in Lafayette. It just screams "Remember us. We have great food in Lafayette. A super successful restaurant in New Orleans can't even hack it here."

I was referencing the N.O. location.
Never ate at the one in Lafayette.

Not in the least the statement is generally made about his boudin... His own damn cousin makes better boudin.
Now other items are very good at Couchon. But sorry the boudin doesnt make my top 10 in state. Ite very avg I dont care how selective he is on ingredients.

I like Cochon a lot, but the amount of love it gets nationally is astounding. Its not the best restaurant in this city.
Yup, I agree. I love Cochon, but it doesn't stand out in New Orleans.
However, I think we are a little jaded by our local perspective. For people not from Louisiana, I think it gives them a great representation of cajun-style cuisine in an appealing restaurant setting. A lot of people around here grew up on that style of food so it doesn't stand out to us. The people making these lists aren't from towns around LA and haven't had the type of cuisine that Cochon offers, so it stands out to them.

I guess thats sorta like when Tony Bourdain made that trip to Cajun Country.

I'm ashamed that I cannot accept that this place is good solely because I feel like Stephanie Izard should not have won Top Chef that season
I agree she stole that season(Mr. Blaise choke job) the place has been well received. I read a review not long ago and was intrigued.
Richard has a new cook book coming out very soon. He's my all time favorite Top Chef.

This probably true. But major press outlets don't go to gas stations in Lafayette.
Cochon has been extremely successful at getting cajun country cooking some attention. I'm glad that it's getting some praise and showing people another side of Louisiana cuisine.

Had a chance to interview Richard a few years ago for something or another. He had probably the best prospective on how his season ended as any athlete or other competitor:
"Some people look at Top Chef as a way to win a golden egg, I looked at it as a way to win a chicken that could lay multiple golden eggs."

I think you've hit on something. As an insider/outsider (i.e., a Louisiana native who has lived up here for a while), Cochon seems to have taken the culinary trend of "fusion" type cuisine and applied it to Cajun style food. It seems (again from an outside perspective) to have taken a cuisine that seemed kind of set in its ways and brought new imagination to it. Having not yet been there, I can definitely see why "foodies" up here would rave about the place.

Ha, that is cool. He does seem to have parlayed his loss well. I assume he is one of the more popular Top Chefs, got his redemption on All Stars. Then he did that "life after" show, looked terrible. I did hear the new cookbook is getting average reviews, hope it's good.

He doesn't really have a Flagship Restaurant?

Thanks, I was thinking he was still just doing the burger joints. I need to get over there.

He still owns those, doesn't he?
Flip Burger > Shake Shack, but Flip Burger is still not one of the top 101 restaurants in America.

I've eaten at the one in DC, not sure how different it is than the NY location but I wasn't really that impressed. I've had better burgers from burgersmith...
