Thoughts: No free refills of soda at sit down restaurants

What are your thoughts about a restaurant just from this little information. Do you infer anything regarding the restaurant’s thought process?

I’d think they’re kind of sleazy, but I also wouldn’t have a problem with it as long as they ask you if you’d like another before just pouring you one.

The argument from my side, is that if they are being that frugal & chinchy with something that costs them approximately $.06-$.10 where else is the owner or management being “clever” to save a few cents. They basically show you exactly the type of people they are from that policy.
What I infer is that the restaurant is not looking for regulars, who appreciate the value and quality and want you to come back. They are more trying to maximize that individual transaction because they know you will likely never be back.
Like they are operating some tourist trap.
Isn’t that how you’d see it?

I've never seen this happen.
I don't order soda at restaurants.
Restaurants are still getting squeezed like hell with cost pressures due to labor rates, etc, so I guess some will do what they feel they need to. Profits are made from drinks they sell, not from food.

Restaurants have been making margins on drinks for years but I've never heard of no refills on fountain drinks

I first found out about this strategy at age 17 in Germany when I asked for a refill. Apparently the US and maybe Canada are the only countries that do free refills. On the flipside, you aren't expected to tip.

I usually drink water at sit downs, but if I wasn’t, I honestly would choose not to go. It’s not that you want a ton of a drink, it’s that you don’t want to run out.
Also, why are you tipping 20% or more if you’re not getting refills?

Most countries don't give you water for free like the US either.

A restaurant doesn’t rely on coke for profits. Alcohol, yes. Coke will add a little to each diner’s cost and it adds up but you’d certainly lose more customers due to no refills than you would make by selling refills. Unless it’s a tourist spot not catering to regulars.

I drink a lot less soda than I used to, but if i still did this would be a dealbreaker

Been there, done that, in California. Didn't know. I ended up spending like $20 on cokes over lunch.

I read an article the other day that said that free refills are coming to an end at most places that offer them. The article said that the customer will no longer be able to go to a soft drink fountain. It also said that the guy behind the counter will be the only one who will get your drink for you. McDonalds in some cities have already starting using the method where the customer is never near a drink machine.

Shipleys donuts does this. they charge $3.95 for their fountain drink sodas, there is only one size, and there are no free refills.

I drink maybe 10 sodas a year and drink water at set down restaurants. Just not a big "soda" guy and most restaurants serve diluted tea.
I do like lemon in my water and what I have never understood is why they cut the lemon in slices and not in wedges. It's a bitch trying to squeeze a slice of lemon.
