This is the price from 20 years ago. Coke is now .40 to .45 per 12 oz pour for just the Coke.
They should still give free refills though.

Why would a restaurant do this? Are you under the impression that free refills cost restaurants a lot of money? They don't.

What are your thoughts about a restaurant just from this little information. Do you infer anything regarding the restaurant’s thought process?
I imagine the servers are thrilled. People who suck down glass after glass of sugar water and glare at the poor server if they don't refill it quickly enough are shitty to deal with. Maybe they'll pace themselves a bit if they actually have to pay for it.

Either that or Asian. I remember one of the first Hibachi restaurants I went to, 20+ years ago, soft drinks were a can they brought you with a glass of ice, And they would ask if you would like another one when your glass was half full, and naturally you'd say yes, they'd bring you a fresh glass and can and walk off with half of what you'd paid for. Wasn't until you got the bill that you realized you'd been paying for each can.

$184/ online for a 5 gallon bag which makes 30 gallons so $.57 per 12 ounches? I'm assuming some places get the syrup for cheaper than my quick google search. But damn that seems crazy that Coke has gone up that much. Ridiculous for literally just syrup.

Yeah pretty close. From Coke or a major distributor you are still looking at about $140-$160 for the 5 gallon. You still have to add the costs of CO2, straws, ice, labor, etc. that increases the cost per serving.
The cost is definitely higher than most people think. Still though free refills should be standard.

That's also per 12oz. If your average person gets a 20 oz cup they probably aren't getting 12 oz of soda, so the margin could drastically decrease.
But still, yeah as with anything its gone up a ton for sure.

Exactly, and when is the last time you have seen a 12 oz glass at a restaurant, most are using the quart size cups, so now that $3 they charge for a soft drink costs them $1.50 , then with one refill they are breaking even and when the customer asks for a Togo cup they loose money
I may be in minority but have no problem with charging for refills and will go a step further and would be okay with a nominal charge for a glass of water

I can understand your dislike of this but I think there is another thing I have noticed recently that goes in the other direction. I now see people getting a to-go refill of their soft drink. I wonder if the no refill policy has been implemented to combat this new more costly phenomenon.
