The supermarket as we know it is changing. A wave of consolidations is sweeping the industry, and the largest chains are changing focus as they face increasing competition from more niche stores. Online-only competitors like Amazon (AMZN) Fresh and FreshDirect are also gaining market share.

The survey revealed that a few stores are doing a great job of satisfying their customers. The magazine graded 55 major chains based on the consumer survey and found that east-coast chain Wegmans ranked the best, with a score of 88 out of 100 possible points.

At the other end of the list, retail behemoth Wal-Mart (WMT) scored the worst, receiving a paltry 67.

H-E-B

Reader score: 81
Location: Texas, northern Mexico
Year founded: 1905

H-E-B appeals to the Texas pride of its customers, with private labels often referencing the Lone Star State and "Hill Country Fare." The chain received above-average rankings on all categories on the survey.

Costco

Reader score: 84
Location: Nationwide
Year founded: 1983

The warehouse chain received the top score in price and perishables, an above-average score for cleanliness, and a neutral score for customer service. Of course, Costco's (COST) model minimizes service and quick cashiers in exchange for the deals it can offer customers on a daily basis.

Publix

Reader score: 85
Location: Fla., Ala., Ga., N.C., S.C., and Tenn.
Year founded: 1930

The largest employee-owned supermarket in the United States, Publix is also the most profitable. The chain was the only grocer to appear on J.D. Power's list of 2014 Customer Champions, which recognizes outstanding customer service.

Trader Joe's

Reader score: 87
Location: Nationwide
Year founded: 1967

This offbeat supermarket chain, which features a limited assortment of goods and specializes in store brands and unusual foods, has gained a rabid fan base. Its Hawaiian shirt-clad workers cater primarily to gourmands and high-end shoppers.

Its about the same distance (and time due to construction of every Uptown street) to get to the Nacs as it is to go to Rouses.

The one Uptown is superior to the Midcity one. The aisles are a mile and half long.

I agree on this. Only knock against them would be to update some of their older stores. The newer ones are just awesome as far as grocery stores go.

Yep. I have one that is "older" in Clear Lake and it's "adequate" but there is one 10 minutes down I-45 in League City that is freaking amazing.

we have aldi's and traders here in nashville.

both are hit & miss..traders can be really expensive on some things and dirt cheap on others. good quality though.

aldi..take your chances i know both they & traders are owned by the same company, but aldi's cracks me up...everytime i'm there i see big black women dumping their groceries in the trunk of their car without bags..they dont want to spend 5 cents on a bag :racist: :thatsnotfunny:

HEB was legit when i lived in texas.

publix is pricey as shite. i have one across the street but avoid it if at all possible + their meat sucks and the management at the one near my house refuses to ever put out 'managers special' meat. frick that noise.

kroger is my go-to and they have great beef.

They are fine for some things, but you can't go and do all of your shopping at Trader Joes. Also, I want to murder whoever came up with the idea of shopping carts for kids. Damn kids running around the store, pushing a cart into everything.

Publix

When I lived in Georgia I always shopped at Publix. They were always super clean with friendly service. I wish they would expand into Louisiana.
