Tell me about this restaurant: Mosca’s in New Orleans

A guy I work with told me this might be the shadiest place he ever ate. I looked around and found a video about it but it mostly seemed like conjecture.
What I gather is there isn’t very many options. Hard to get a reservation. It’s darkly lit. Kind of run down. Cash only. Open about 10-12 hours a week total.
Purported old mob hangout.
But food is amazing.

Back in the day you had go be invited to go.
I’ve never been.
I think when my dad worked for the city of New Orleans - he got to go on a business lunch there

Calvin Trillin on Mosca's
quote:Faactoid of the Day:
It is true that Mosca’s devotion to garlic has remained unchanged since the days when Provino Mosca was at the stove, and almost the same can be said of the menu; it’s not the sort of place that surprises you with its daily specials. I could give my order before I get out of the car. I should say “our order,” since the family-style portions served at Mosca’s make it not the place to go for that contemplative dinner alone. We’ve always wanted Italian Crab Salad, Oysters Mosca, Spaghetti Bordelaise, Chicken a la Grande, Shrimp Mosca, and Mosca’s Sausage. At times, we have ordered the Chicken Cacciatore as well as the Chicken a la Grande. I consider that a permissible variation. We have never ordered Chicken Cacciatore instead of Chicken a la Grande. I do not consider that a permissible variation.
quote:
The Moscas pronounce it with a long “o,” as in “Joe,” while everyone in New Orleans has always pronounced the first syllable to rhyme with “ma” or “pa.”

First off, it’s not in New Orleans...

It’s a ways from Nola for one thing.
The building is ugly and the cash only crap annoys me
Food is good for groups all willing to share portions and go do something different

it is possible to have the best meal of your life at mosca’s

How is it possible to still have a cash only business these days? I would think the only obvious reasons for doing so would be to skip out on taxes but you'd think the IRS would be pretty tough on a place with name recognition like Moscas.
One day I'll make it out there to try it.

Had a great feature on the Somebody Feed Phil episode on New Orleans (Netflix)

I've only eaten there a handful of times and loved it every time. It is well outside N.O. city limits off Hwy. 90 but well worth the drive.
It did have a rep as a mob place when Carlos Marcello was in N.O. doing what mob figures do, but that was decades ago now.

Old mob place, didn’t al Capone chef work there back in the day. Think Anthony bourdain had an episode there before he passed but that could have been Phil
