Its surprising there's not a big market like that in New Orleans. I know its up river and Joe Patti's boats literally park outside of their shop so that wouldn't happen, but just being a big city essentially on the coast you would think there would be enough population to have a really good seafood market.

2 things the bummed me out when I visited in June:
1) the sushi bar wasn't open, they were looking for a new chef
2) they no longer sell the stuffed beignets out front

I agree. I think “Porgys” is trying to appeal to fish buyers but obviously on a much smaller scale and not the premium species.

3 Piers in Des Allemands is excellent.
Hard to find species and 1st class service.
Love that place.

The Westwego Shrimp Lot is likely as impressive as anything LIKE IT on the Gulf Coast. It's just a completely different animal than a full service market like Joe Patti's.
I don't know if the Shrimp Lot comes into play in keeping the NO area from having something like Joe Patti's market-wise.

Tony’s seafood is the best we have in BR but can’t compare with Joe Patti’s.

As with others, Joe Patti's is the best fish market that I've experienced in US. I try to get Pompano which they often have. I don't know what their supply chain is like, but very few of the fish are likely to be caught on one of Patti's boats. Items like basa are imported frozen and thawed for display and sale.
As with any fish market, look for whole fish with clear eyes and red gills. I was in a fish market in Turkey where all the whole fish on display had the gill cover cut off so you could see how bright red the gills were.

Best ever. We go every time we’re in the area. Lobster and flounder cut for stuffing are some favorites.

Man, if time permits I even try to go and just hang out by the docks at JP’s and watch the activity with a few beers. It’s a great coastal fishing activity spot.

The Westwego market is legit enough for selection and price but it’s like Joe Patti’s white trash cousin.

Many years ago, we were at the beach and Patti’s was running a late-night call-in style infomercial where one of the young women hosted and old Uncle Joe or whoever answered questions.
He was very open about the far flung sources for many of the items. People would ask where some item came from, and he might say they were currently getting it out of the Indian Ocean or the North Sea. Stuff came from all over the planet.

I’m sure. I’ve never been there but I’ve seen the commercials. A lot of stuff they carry isn’t even native to the gulf.

A lot of their products are native to the Gulf and, in fact, fresh out of the Gulf. I like the variety.

Same here. Simple solution is to only buy stuff native to the Gulf

$8 a lb for headless Royal Reds yesterday. Those things are fricking butter

The royal reds everyone raves about are Argentinian
Makes ya think, considering the access FL has to royal reds in their own backyard
