Yes. That old location was operating in the ‘80’s, also.
I never went to Silver Moon Cafe...did I miss out? I spent all my money at AM Mart and Jackie's Seafood...

Yes. You missed out on a fantastic experience. The plate lunches were unbelievably good and very cheap.

It just wasn't her real recipes...and weren't really full recipes at all.
yeah thats not much of a recipe , which is fine she obviously cooks by feel and instinct but that doesnt make for a very useful cookbook.

soul food is hard to replicate if you didnt grow up cooking it

Yikes...I can't imagine what the rest of the recipes will look like. I can probably guess what she did with all the ingredients that aren't mentioned in the steps, but I can only imagine how difficult it may be to follow some of the other recipes. Hope I'm wrong. Would love to have the recipes for myself.

For Mama's new cookbook, we have several professionals and LSU graduates, including myself - an LSU journalism graduate, a graphic designer, food stylist and food photographer, book editors and a major publisher working on this new cookbook. .

We are testing each recipe multiple times for accuracy and rewriting for Mama.

I hope the recipe in the letter (which I received today) is from the old book and not an example of a rewrite for the new book.

Does anyone know if this cookbook was ever released. All of the links, or if i typed in silmermooncookbook.com are no longer working. I would be interested in this as I went there a few times back in the 80's as a student and the food was awesome.

The OP of this thread has disappeared, but his name is Jackie Adams and he’s a journalist. At one time he wrote for unfiltered with kiran among other places. Someone with better google-fu than me could probably find him.

Many people here sent money to buy the book and evidently no book is forthcoming. I hope that they’ve refunded the money. And RIP to mama seabell

They still have my money, and I don't foresee getting it back. No communication from them or Kiran, who I emailed since she ran an article promoting the book.

I've written it off to the "I got ripped off, and I hope they get permanent diarrhea as payback" department.

Recipes weren’t instructive

It's all bacon grease and hog lard.. so much of it, I gave the book away as an office Christmas gift to a coworker who also enjoyed the Moon. No stories , photographs, history or any connection to the LSU students she served. Worst cookbook ever written.

the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I’ve no doubt that the intentions were good but now they need to make it right…OP should come back here and explain what’s going on

It's fair to say the first book was a money grab and I assume the 2nd one was going to be one as well.

There are some GREAT cooks on this site. I would LOVE for a group to start testing and trying to re-create those recipes. I don't want great White Beans...I want Silver Moon White Beans. And, her Red Beans. And, her cornbread.

If it's lard and chicken stew at the base of the recipe (I think that's part of it), so be it.

It would be quite the challenge to have a collaborative re-creation of something extinct. It's kind of like Jurassic park.

It would be a true benefit to society.

The butter bean recipe in the first book works fine.

Everyone raves about the Silver Moon because it was a momma cooking soul food from the heart out of kitchen like a house and not a restaurant. That was the appeal and what made it beloved.

Now y'all are shocked that this same sweet old lady, after being asked repeatedly to make a cookbook, created an amateur cookbook based on recipes she probably never measured in her entire life?

I'm pretty sure she had little or nothing to do with the book, and what all this has been is her family and friends taking advantage of her legacy and trying to make some easy cash by playing the sympathy card and conning lots of folks. They've been playing this game for years and it's the same bullshite over and over. I feel sorry for those that got scammed.

I'd file a credit card dispute (if it's not too late) if you ordered this book.

Silver Moon white beans were the best. I am not kidding when I say that I'd hand over $250 without a second thought in exchange for a plate of Silver Moon white beans, corn bread, and either the stewed chicken or the sausage.

There’s got to be enough people here talented enough who can apply what they remember and bounce ideas off of each other enough to start getting close.

I’m like you. Just being able to relive that memory would be worth a lot.
