I think we can support 4 more bars in that area. They're building for gameday, just like hotels and the quarter are built for tourist season.

Connected to Walk-on's. Where Smith and Wollensky used to be.

for anyone, wasn't there a strong rumor about ESPN Zone in Benson Towers when they first debuted that project?

I think that died along with all but two of their locations.

Correct there was talk of it. But ESPN/Disney closed all the locations except Anaheim and Orlando, which are both on Disney Properties.

While I can't comment on anything specific to ESPN Zones, the turnover rate on those types of places near Times Square or other tourist attractions are pretty high. As everyone goes there to either look around or have one order of cheesefries to say they ate at ________. That simply isn't enough revenue.

Saints Gameday = 8 Days a year plus pre-season and possible post-season. Not a whole of $$$$ action here for these places. Sure it's a huge day of sales for them but they have the rest of the year to worry about. Manning's will probably be okay because of the location near Harrah's, convention center, etc.
I think a dedicated dining area/sports bar in the Champion's Square area wouldn't get enough traffic on non-game days.

+ Hornets game-day, which is 41 times a year, assuming they never make the playoffs. + whatever events might show up, a la Final Four or the Superbowl. All tourist-heavy places in this city face seasonal issues, which includes basically everything downtown and in the quarter. These places are no different, they have seasonal businesses, that is the business model in that area and it works fine as long as you understand and plan for the timing of business activity.
I'm not saying they're going to be minting money or anything, but I don't think that simply having 4 new places open is going be a death-knell for any one of them, in and of itself. What will be, is if they just suck, which is always a possibility.

Long term I think that entire area is going to look a lot different. It will be busier and there's even more residential development in the future. I've never heard of some of those places that have been mentioned, though. fricking Dave & Busters is a new one on me. Plust I'd never heard of Five Guys until I read about it on this board a year or so ago. I need to get out more.

All I know is that my buddies in Houston think its the cat's pajamas. I'm not sure it really fits with nola culture, but we also don't have anything like it at all...

One important thing tho, traditionally and usually most Saints games start at 12 noon. In a city known to stay out late at best it gives a sports bar near the dome a 3 hour window to sell booze before a game. Sure they will get post game traffic as well, but people also tend to go home after Saints games (school/work next day).
Compare that to a typical game in Tiger Stadium which is going to begin at 7:30 or so and there is a smaller window of time to maximize revenues on your big ticket days.
And Hornets likely arent going to be here much longer, which is a shame.

Well I guess they're all doomed to failure then.

No, I dont think they are doomed to failure, but shifting their focus to capturing lunch and luring diners at night would be a good idea.
Now they are also supposed to be putting in a streetcar line down rampart so that could certainly add more traffic.
Personally, I have just never got the allure of sports bars. I know why people like them, perhaps it is just that I scream to much at the tv to do so in public.

If I want to watch a game and munch on food for 5 hrs, I find sports bar-type atmospheres to be intriguing. I'm not going unless there's a game though, and I wouldn't dare set foot in one 200 feet from the stadium, as its probably obscenely packed.

Yeah, from the train/bus station to the shithole end of Canal St.
Not sure how much affluent traffic that will be carrying to upscale restaurants/sports bars.
I'll be happy to see any place in that area make it. It's just hard to overlook the problematic nature of the location for day in, day out foot traffic.
