That being said, some guys next to us won a few years ago and they used jar roux, Swanson’s stock, manda sausag, and Guidrys trinity. It wasn’t good to me or anyone else I know that tried it. But hey, they won so more power to them.
Yeh the guys who won last year were next to us. Cooked all their meat in a separate pot and dropped it in there to serve... we’ve been on the stage the last 2yrs though. Hopefully make it there again!

Every year we have posters from this board enter
Only to then come complain how the event is rigged and the people don’t know what real gumbo is. I expect this year to be no different
I'd imagine winning a gumbo cook-off is one of the hardest things to do, and I doubt the people who win are actually the best it's just after a while everything tastes the same and there's no real way to separate the upper teams...but it's real easy to identify terrible gumbo.
I've won jambalaya cook-offs and chili cook-offs and I will never enter a gumbo cook-off

I think mediocre gumbo made from jarred roux and boxed stock has become so common place that people take it for a good gumbo. It's the quick version that has become the go to for a lot of people. I don't know if people actually can describe what a great gumbo really is....

"Back in my day, if we wanted a good gumbo we had to plan 7 months in advance so we had time to grow the wheat for the flour. And don't get me started on how difficult it is to extract enough oil from all those seeds. Those store bought bottles of oil just don't compare, though."

which means if you want to swing both, you'll get downtown just in time for everyone to be cleaning up and loading up their pots.
Why not just go before the game for an hour and a half then take the 10 min drive over to campus?

Theur gumbo was great.
I gave my tickets to Taylor Porter law firm. Fried chicken gumbo. First time having it. Fantastic
Phil's was absolutely terrible. It tasted like they went to tiger stadium after a game and scraped up peanuts after a thousand people stepped on them and cooked with them. Worst gumbo by far

Ya'll are making me wish I could have made it so I could try Phil's.
Is that a guy named Phil or sponsored by The Oyster Bar?
