I’m really hoping one small good thing that comes out of this is that some landlords will reduce rent for an extended period of time, and Ben after we get out of this mess. The rent/lease rates seemed to have gotten stupid expensive down here

Not really surprised by this, I know of one place here in Lafayette that closed immediately and never went to the to-go only format, I'm sure there's others that did the same. One of downtown's best restaurants just shut down after trying the to-go thing until this is over with and I won't be surprised if others follow shortly. With people getting laid off left and right people are going to be hesitant to be spending $30+ on a meal if they're unsure what their financial outlook will be in the coming weeks.

P.F. Chang’s in Nola closing for good too.
Like they are not opening back up even after this is all over? Where did you hear/see this?

My guess is that many places initially did the take-out thing to run through remaining product
Yeah, a few of them in NOLA have said on their social media that they made it through all their inventory and will now be closing. Makes sense. I can't imagine placing a new wholesale order not having a clue if/when you can go through the product.
I am planning to order a lot of stuff from Umami on Monday for a birthday, but wondering how much business they're even doing right now and if they will be open still come Monday..

Ben's Burgers shut down? But I thought it was the best burger in the universe

Ki Mexico shut down. I guess a lot of these places relied on bar tabs.

Not necessarily I’m hearing a lot of landlords are outright refusing to give up rent or telling tenants they will defer payments for ninety days but must make up missed rent by end of year. Also a new inventory order for most restaurants is north of $10,000.00, and insurance doesn’t cover pandemics. Utility bills still need to be paid, and then you May have to rehire a whole new staff. For most restaurants that were teetering before this they will close their doors permanently.

telling an entire city to stay home might have an effect on sales. Can’t run a place staffed for 24hours a day on a hand full of customers paying $9 for a full meal. Laid off 60% of the staff and still wasn’t worth staying open. The smarter decision for 90% of restaurants without a drive thru right now is to lessen the damage meaning close and only pay utilities and rent until this blows over. Now is not the time to be a food critic think logically. No body likes an eye roller.

Anybody know if Little Chinatown in Kenner is still taking carryout orders?

Most will close outright cause we don’t know the reopen date. Have heard as far as May 8th. Lots of res will close 60-90 days after the reopen date when they try to reopen with no capital u less these sba loans come through on time. It will be brutal

Shelter in Place until May 8th??? Or just the restaurant/bar 10 person limit?

Friends in restaurant industry tell me a) Nobody wants to work esp now that they are seeing the unemployment stuff and checks are coming b) they are doing 20% or less of their business and that's the ones who are still doing what we think is good and 0% of their regular markup alcohol business3) They would lose less by shutting down completely 4) Its not worth the time, effort and misery as an owner considering the previous 3 issues. If they are able to work out something with their landlord until federal relief gets here they are closing. Also once they go through product and see how it is they are just not reordering. Sysco just laid off a bunch of people as well.

What percentage of restaurants open in Jan 2020 do you think will be open in Jan 2021?

Nope. Tried calling earlier in the week and got a voice mail saying they were closed.
