What available beer tastes closest to Bass Ale?
Harp is usually the substitute for Bass in a Black and Tan is there is no Bass. Next would be Boddington's pub ale then pretty much any ESB but to match Bass you want only moderate amounts of hops and a decent amount of malt with some caramel.
I can't help the OP too much not being in LA but I would say one thing about beer: one of the cool things about beer that isn't true with wine or whisk(e)y is that you can taste some of the best beers in the world without taking out a second mortgage on the house or hitting a 100x stock pick. My favorite beers are Trappist beers, if it says Trappist it is brewed in one of the 13 Trappist monastery breweries, they are all in Europe and most are in Belgium. Many breweries brew similar beers and they will be labeled as an Abbey. My favorite is La Trappe which is in the Netherlands. Chimay has been mentioned which is a Belgium Trappist. I say all this to suggest if you try and like the taste of Trappist/Abbeys then at some point track down (which may mean ordering) a Westvleteren 12. It won't be cheap but you will have had one of the best beers in the world, full stop. While again not cheap it will still cost less than a dram of an upper middle single malt.

I love their IPA
I would recommend the 312 for someone just starting out.

I was about to comment on this thread and figure out where everyone was finding green flash, then saw the post date of 2016.

I can still get Green Flash, NE OH, but it’s not the same beer. At one point it and Sculpin were my go to West Coast IPAs. They both were ruined after the breweries got bought out.

It did bring me back though. The good old days of getting into good beer and trying to check in whatever I could get my hands on for a badge on an app.

Green Flash Rayon Vert and Le Freak were fantastic beers.

We tried 'Trippel' Belgian style ale brewed in Colorado (New Belgium Brewing) and it was very good. A good substitute for Bass for now. Thanks for the info!

All: Is Envié still good? It was damn solid back in the Baby Ghost/GITM rarity days but never hear it mentioned nowadays.

Chimay red label is hard to beat when it comes to ones you can usually find in a good package store.

I've had Guiness - didn't care for it. Too thick/dark. Felt like I was drinking a bottle of tobacco spit
It's an acquired taste. I can vividly remember the first Guiness I had many years ago at a bar in the French Quarter called "The Irish Harp". It was during a dart tournament one Sunday afternoon and I could not finish it.
I tried it again at another Irish bar and got to liking the taste. I describe it as a "meal in a glass" since it is such a hearty beer, and now it's one of my favorites, but I will only drink them when in an Irish bar. They know how to pour it and to do so in a room temperature glass pint.
