Order is around $70. When dining in I usually tip 20%. I usually throw in a couple of buck for take out, but I've never had a take out order this large. Thanks in advance.

A dollar or 2 on small orders and a $3-$5 on bigger ones.

It depends: is it a place that does a majority of business as takeout, like a Jimmy John's? If so, I might toss a buck or so into a counter tip cup. Or, if it's being delivered and it's a large order, a couple bucks for the delivery guy.

On the other hand, if the food is coming from a place that is really a sit-down restaurant & the food is carefully boxed, I might tip a bit more.

Or if it's a place where I am a regular, I tip around 10%, because I usually get better service & will be remembered as a good customer.

I picked up take out from a sit down restaurant the other night. Our bill was $45, so I just made it an even $50

On take out, I usually do $1 per entree ordered. So if I'm prdering take out for me, wife, and 2 kids, I'll throw $4 on there.

To me, $1 per person is all that's likely going to the people in the back anyways, if I dine-in.

All of this is spot on.

Most of the time if I'm getting take out it's from my regular bar and grill place or one or two local mom and pop restaurants. They take good care of me and the bartenders and such remember that I tip well on phone to go orders so it works out well.

Even the trips I make for take out at the local Mexican restaurant, the guys are happy to see me.

As said, its all about the effort put into the preperation for you. If is one meal and they simply wrapped a sandwich in paper or threw the chinese into a to go box and hand it to you then maybe $1. But if its for a family and its like 3 whole bags of food, with side salads, they included silverware, napkins, sauce, salad dressing, etc. If someone spent a good 5-10 minutes prepping it and double checking its all there. That's worth 5% usually and 10% if I'm a routine customer.

$0

You're paying for the food not food & service.

I always tip but the amount can vary depending on:

1. If the place has good service, even for pickup
2. If the food ready consistently upon arrival
3. How long I have to wait in line to pick up the food (places with shitty to-go counter, or no standalone to-go counter)
4. The amount of bill

If all things go well this equates to an average of $2 for small orders and $3/4 for large orders on average.

The damn iPads piss me off.

Places that I used to never consider tipping at are now asking me for a tip. I don't want to tip, I shouldn't have to. But I also don't want to turn the iPad over to the people preparing my food now knowing that I have not tipped them.

I always tip on to go orders.

Just be aware of your surroundings. If its some chain restaurant like Chili's who has a person who specifically gets paid to do to go orders and you don't want to tip them, then whatever.

but if its a bartender who is taking to go orders just remember they're tending their bar customers and making every drink in the dining room. So I feel they deserve to be tipped. Same goes for a server who is gathering to go orders while waiting on tables.
