This.....and his spaghetti and meatballs!!

I have a number of Pokie stories. For years we would meet there on Fridays.

My daughter and granddaughters, along with myself love cheese. Pokie had the case with meats and cheeses. The big cheese wheel, I’d get a large slice of cheese. I’d put it in my ice chest to bring home. Many times Pokie would do an inventory and any cheese that was expired or getting close. He’d throw it into my ice chest. When I’d get home, it was like Christmas morning.

The Muff was one of my favorites, during lent, the Olive Oil, Butter Shrimp Pasta. One Friday, the first Friday in lent, I walk in an order it. Pokie tells me he doesn’t have any shrimp. I looked him straight in the eyes, without saying a word. He thought of a second, a said lent. I asked how can you be Italian and Catholic?
The next Friday, he had Shrimp!

His Italian sausage was to me, the best I’d ever tasted.

What some might not know, Pokie and Gino Marino (The Owner of Gino’s Restaurant) are best of friends. Gino’s Brother Laurence, passed away not long after Pokie’s wife, Vita, both are buried within a few feet of each other, Pokie will soon be there.

They will all be in the St George mausoleum.

Miss that place and fishing around my wallet for cash instead of card.

Sad to hear, great neighbor, his gruff exterior hid a very generous and kind man. He will be greatly missed.

Since he liked to charge those of us who were not Italian an extra dollar or two

I loved that place. In high school, I worked at Pepperonis Pizza on old Jefferson. Once I found his place and tried the meatball sub, I was hooked.

He gave me shite for working at one place, but eating in another in uniform. I kept going back for the sub and the ribbing.

Life went on and I popped in from time to time. He remembered me, gave me a hard time after I asked if he took cards, even though I knew he didn't.

I was pretty sad when he closed, I didn't feel like I could say goodbye. RIP Pokie!
