I feel like you've worked with less than genius people before. I like the way you think.

To be fair though, I'm pretty sure all of the avenue pub's staff is Cicerone certified. That's quite an accomplishment and it shows in the way that they can tell you about a beer and use the proper glassware.

I will freely admit that although I spend a ton of money trying different beers that I'm sure I don't necessarily know the proper glassware for all of them. In fact, I almost always end up drinking out of a cocktail glass simply because I prefer the shape and find it easier to hold (I'm talking about at home not at a bar).

I would think there are way more career service industry people in that are than in BR. It shows.

Btw, never got an email from you the other day. You can try again. fightintigers23 at yahoo

Speaking of, our friend from Portland is taking his exam next month and has asked us to help him practice with the blind tasting portion. I told him we could probably set something up.

I drink 99% of my beer at home out of some sort of tulip glass.

Usually the Spiegelau version, unless it's dirty!

I firmly believe that you don't need any more than two kinds of glassware in a bar. Pints and tulips. Any more than that is just overkill.

They also only have like 8 people who work there, all of whom are not college kids trying to make a living.

Ditto. The tulip glasses are just so much better for the aroma of the beer.

I'd agree with that. Well, plus tasters for flights.

Finally made it out to Pelican House last night. Wasn't too crowded, so I got to sit at the bar. I thought the beer selection was good. They have the Ommegang seasonal saison on tap which is f'ing delicious. Also decided to try some food. Got the turkey and pork belly club. Pretty underwhelming. Couple pieces of turkey, lettuce, tomato, onion. The problem with the sandwich was the so called pork belly. I recieved 3 of the hardest pieces of bacon I think I have ever eaten. So bad, that I had to take them off my sandwich. My friend sitting next to me was laughing at the sound of my teeth breaking. I know its just a club, but damn! If you're gonna make it sound interesting on a menu, at least attempt to make it half decent. I'll be back for the beer selection though. Also, the spacing in that place is weird. Not sure what would make better, but it just has a strange feel with the bar in the front corner like that.

Half-pints would at least be a nice start. I don't want a whole pint of Monk's Cafe.

The guys running the place are around 30yrs old and have dumped a ton of money into the place and are trying to appease everyone while not going under.

I know I'm dragging up 12 hour old stuff, but on my two trips there, this has been my biggest problem.

The place is attempting at once to be absolutely EVERYTHING. It's got every bar gimmick under the sun, and its all just thrown together. It won't be for me, but I hope they do well in the long run, they seem nice enough.

This is why I couldn't own a bar in Baton Rouge. If you stay strictly to a beer bar plan, you'll only attract the beer geeks. If you are strictly a nightclub, you'll only attract the people who want that atmosphere. Etc etc.

I feel like bars in BR are always so desperate for a "theme" in order to target a certain crowd and have guaranteed business from them. Pelican seems to be trying to combine them in order to target various people.

Problem is like you said though.. It's a restaurant and a beer bar and an upper scale lounge and a casual hangout all in one. They want it nice enough to keep the ladies who are dressed sexy in the place but they've said several times they want industry people to feel they can come straight from the kitchen and hang. Well I'm not going straight from my industry job to a place where every chick is in heels and sequins with their hair down.
(This is more a chick thing but I thought of it when you mentioned being an all in one).

I've had a wonderful time each time I've been and will continue to keep the place in my rotation. I'm becoming bored with my regular spots.. Which tends to happen when you go out 5 nights a week. But I certainly can agree with some the gripes.

Others, on the other hand, are far too picky.
Friend of jones' was aggravated they didn't have a host seating people when we went to grab dinner and drinks. I find that to be a picky gripe because its not a restaurant to me.

good review, although you mention the Bulldog-that place sucks(actually, it's crowd sucks). The Cove has been the best bar in BR since it opened, "snobby" bartenders or not. Pelican House sounds awesome
