Pelican House Tap Room and Whiskey Bar off of Corporate

Went last night for the first time and I gotta say they did a great job with that space and theyre probably going to kill it right there. The place is really nice and spacious. The full bar is to the right when you walk in, side bar to the left for im guessing cocktails. Big space in the middle with sit down tables and bar tables around the area. Have another seating area towards the back with nice couches.
The beer selection is awesome. 137 beers on tap and a bunch of bottles. Got a good Belgian selection which is what I like and the prices arent steep at all. A bunch of local beers also. Endeavour on tap(Kim
)
Im not much into liquor but their whiskey selection seems pretty good also.
They werent serving food yet but they did pass around some samples last night. We had the gator and it was tasty. The menu looks legit and I think they start with food on Monday for their official opening.
I think it's gonna hurt the Bulldog initially but after awhile I think it will all even out in terms of business. I initially thought it was gonna kill the Cove, but after going there last night I think it might actually help it. The bars are just way too different in terms of service and overall appearance for people to just stop going to the Cove.
Should also be a good place to watch LSU and Saints games. Owner said they have big screens that come out of the ceiling that they are gonna use for gamedays.
Overall they did an outstanding job with the place and BR just got a great beer bar that was much needed.
The only problem with the place and I am being extremely nit picky here was the music. It was a little too "old" for the crowd thats gonna go there. I talked to one of the owners for awhile and the service manager and they both kinda felt the same way. I told them a good middle ground between what they were currently playing and what the Bulldog plays right now would be ideal. The Bulldog has gone way overboard with their music lately. I think even lounge type music late at night would be really good. Not clubby music but music you hear in ultra lounges. Once again, being real nit picky here. The place is awesome, go check it out.

I've heard good things. Our brew club was there Thursday evening and they told me it was legit. Look great from the pictures, and the list of beers had by the brew club was impressive. They had
Wittekerke White Ale
Moylan's Hopsickle
Ommegang BPA
Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Black IPA
NOLA Irish Channel Stout
Brooklyn Brown Ale
Bitberger Pilsner
Boulder Sweaty Betty
Strubbe Grand Cru (x2)
Bellhaven Scottish Ale
Green Flash IPA
That's just what they drank, which is awesome cause that means there are 126 more beers to be had there.
The only thing I don't like is its bicycle access, or lack there of, but whatever. That's Baton Rouge. What are you going to do?

nice
and i was going to ask about the music. this is very important
when you say 'old' are we talking honky tonk or kinda like old classic rock or what? i had a long discussion with the manager of the londoner about the right kind of music....

it was basically jazz. i dont mind it but it just had an old feel to it. older than their target audience
they changed it to a rebirth brass band type channel later in the night

I was kinda hoping that this place would be focusing on the 30-and-older crowd and not the young immature college kids.
How does it compare to The Cove?

Sign me up. Been wanting to go since they announced they were doing this. Maybe Kim will invite me, even though he spurned my latest BXN offerings.

thats exactly what theyre doing
this is not a college hangout place at all.
ill put it to you this way, i feel like if i walked in there in anything less than jeans and a nice button up collared shirt, i would be out of place

much nicer. better draft beer selection by far. better staff. will have good food. wont smell like shite when you leave from smoke.

I liked the jazz music. Nice, local flare.

I'm gonna hit it next week. Sounds like my kind of place. I'd go to Bulldog more, but those GD ciggs ruin it.
Reminds me of bar hopping uptown in New Orleans when I was in high school, waking up Sat./Sun. morning, and smelling like I had puffed down a pack of Camel non-filters. The sheets would reek, the pillows wouldn't recover for days, and the clothes would have to go to the dry cleaner.

I dont mind it either but 25-35 year olds arent going to want to listen to that all the time.
They said they were going to keep the music light during the day and change it up around 10pm. Good idea imo

I don't consider that a good thing.

That's what I remember from when I checked it out Wednesday night.
Personally I'd prefer to never step foot in Cove again now that this place is open. I'm sure that won't be the case, but I can hope.
Biggest plus, that you didn't mention unless I glossed over it, is that it's a non-smoking establishment.

i would say its a good thing because they have a target crowd.
sounds to me like they are targeting young professionals. which i have always thought BR lacked, being a college town is great and all, but its also the capitol and there are lots of 25-35 year olds that i always felt had no where to go.
The bulldog is great, but i personally cant stand the smell of smoke sometimes, sometimes it bothers me, other times im smoking... i know
i want to check it out.
anyone know if they have any good NA beers?

I didnt directly mention it. Just said how you leave the Cove smelling like shite because of the smoke.

Why is that?
I meant at night also when I was talking about what I would be wearing. If im going during the day for lunch, yea shorts would be fine by me.
Im not going to walk in there in clothes that look like I was just working in the yard

I'm not saying I'd want to do that. But I'd hope I can feel comfortable there wearing a T-shirt and shorts in good condition on a hot summer night.
It'll be interesting to see how the "vibe" of the place develops.
