Solid work, OP!

As others stated, lettuce wraps instead of tortilla. Also may want to consider a greek yogurt sauce instead of sour cream(I'm assuming).

You can flavor the yogurt to tailor to your meal and it's better for you.

The flour tortillas are 80 calories each. You are eating 2-3 of them. Keep the flour ones for Christ's sake, they taste good. If you used lettuce you are looking at what, a 200 calorie dinner? Move around a little more to work the extra calories off if you are that concerned.

You start discounting "just 200 calories" and the next thing you know it's 500 calories

The guy said he's not working out, too. Turn those tortillas into a "bowl" a la Chipotle. Cut out those bars. Those carbs and sugar will slow him down

He should be. Nothing melts the pounds away like watching your diet and exercising. Move more, eat less.

Doesn't take a lot to work out. Get in the routine. You can eat great all you want, but it should be accompanied by some sort of exercise. That sour cream on the tacos aren't helping anything either.

I agree

But dieting is the hard part. If you get that down the exercise is easy. It's as simple as walking

This is why people are so confused about weight loss.

You have one camp saying it is simple calories in < calories out. You have another camp saying even if you manage to consume less than 1200 calories a day, things like sour cream "aren't good". I understand sugars, sodium, etc. should all be kept low.. but if all of that matters so much, then it really isn't simple calories in < calories out, is it?

Light sour cream is 23 calories per tablespoon. If I can't dollop a little sour cream on my burrito in a bowl (whose grand total comes to 350 calories for the entire meal) or split a tablespoon between two tacos (which is a rare meal for me), that's a miserable life I don't want to live.

I know you responded to someone else, but I recommended subbing sour cream for greek yogurt. It's a limited calorie reduction, but it does have more protein. Plus, you don't have to live life without some taco topping.

This.

And exercise. Hell, I run just so I can eat food I want to and drink beer I like. Super low calorie diets are simply unsustainable. Food is fuel for your body, but you still gotta take the car out for a drive.

To be honest this is kind of the entire "diet" craze in a nutshell. My philosophy is do as much shopping as possible in the outside aisles of the store (where the meats/veggies/fruits/dairy stuff is) and don't go into the aisles unless there is something you need (i go in there for canned beans/tomatoes etc). If the majority (80%) of your money is spent on the outside aisles you should be fine

This is how I dropped from 225 down to 192 (at 5'11") and stayed there for the last 4 years. I can't even drink more than 1/3 of a Coke now...way to sweet. After 6 months soft drink and junk food will make you gag...fast food will make you feel like you have a lead weight in your belly.

For exercise I do kettle bell weights twice a week for ~30 minutes. I walk 3 miles 3 times a week.

If I lay off the beer on the weekends for a few weeks I'm down to 185ish pretty fast.

at the root this is all it is

but if all of that matters so much,

it boils down to food quality. There could be 1200 calories of bad food. Or there could be 1200 calories of clean, healthy food.

from his OP, this guy seems to want to be on that clean eating path, which is why i think most people are splitting hairs here. ie flour tortilla vs lettuce wrap, sour cream vs none, or greek yogurt, as mentioned, is a good substitute.

If he isnt exercising, he'll see better results omitting that stuff. He'll feel better, too.

Sensible post. In a nutshell calories in vs. Out matters...but the better your food choices are within that calorie structure the more beneficial.

Wow.. I didn't think of it that way. That makes sense. And you're right.. something like subbing Greek yogurt for sour cream is such a negligible difference in flavor. I never thought of doing that.

Same with tortillas, really. You can make a bowl or salad with the taco/burrito fillings and it is just as enjoyable. The tortilla generally adds nothing flavor-wise, now that I think about it.

there are people that will argue food composition does not matter. Which is kind of crazy, but ok. Im sure they'll be along shortly.
