Ordering Mexican tacos at a Mexican restaurant.

luckily our local place obliges, but it's an off of the menu offering. Seems strange to have to order it 'Mexican', when did tacos change...and didn't they invent it?
Mexican tacos are meat, onions, cilantro, lime, and chili sauce, all on a corn tortilla.
I've only been able to get the steak version locally, I may ask for a different protein next time. Photo of an example.

This is America. We eat our tacos like we do our burgers: "meat and cheese only." Don't be puttin' any of that other "stuff" on it. And don't forget the big spoonful of sour cream.

I have no idea what you are talking about...
I've never had to do this at a taqueria before. Are you ordering from a TexMex place?

Where are you?
I had never seen a real taco until moving to TX, but my goodness they are the best.
Most of the hole in the wall taquerias near me serve them this way by default. Only larger texmex chains serve "American Tacos" around my house.
Corn tortilla, al pastor, cilantro, onion, lime

All Mexican joints are texmex where I live.

Meat, onion, cilantro/thread.
Perhaps a sauce for heat.

What is 'normal' at this restaurant? Hard shells and dressed like Taco Bell? Most Mexican restaurants that are authentic enough to serve tacos on corn tortillas usually don't have hard shells. Are you referring to the onions and cilantro? That's the normal dressing for certain types of meet like barbacoa, but using a different protein will often result in different dressing/salsa on it.

Taco shops serve them like that here in SD. They're everywhere. Shrimp and lobster tacos are the tits.

His point seemed innocuous enough to me, but what the hell do I know?

Normal is lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream...at the two local Mexican restaurants. When I asked for what I wanted by the ingredients, the first time, the waiter said, "Mexican?"
