Do opened bottles of whiskey, liqueurs, gin/vodka go bad over time?

Over the past several years I've acquired a lot of boxes of opened booze while helping family and friends clean house to get ready to move. I'm now in the situation where I need to start getting rid of stuff and I'm either going to use the stuff or get rid of it - some bottles have 1/2 others more or less - some of the opened bottles probably 20 years old - and yeah, I did cautiously taste some of the whiskey and it seemed ok - the liqueurs (kahlua, creme de...) I don't know

The more air in the bottle the faster the decline.

It won't really go bad for decades. It just won't taste great after a while.

A few Thanksgiving ago we drank an open bottle of whiskey from 1945.

Cheap whiskey. Tasted like cheap whiskey.

I would toss the liqueurs but straight alcohols will be fine for a long time. Bourbon, vodka, scotch, etc.

IDK, after high school my parents had a friend over and gave him some Scotch that had somehow converted into tea.

If it has dairy/cream, toss it.

If it doesn't, drink it.

That's a peculiar phenomenon. Same thing happened to my parents, except it was Vodka that had strangely turned into water after my sister went away to college.

I'm sure there is science somewhere to explain it.

Hard liquor fine for decades

If it has sugar in it (triple sec etc) might get skunky after a few years

They’re all bad. Let’s arrange a time for my hazmat team to acquire them

We found an old decanter of Jim Beam that was shaped like the Superdome when we were cleaning my grandmothers house after she passed (my grandfather collected whiskey decanters, but wasn’t much of a drinker). It was produced the year that the Superdome opened. It still had bourbon in it, so I opened it and smelled it. It smelled fine, but I wasn’t brave enough to taste it.

My FIL passed away In 2010, found a bottle of Crown from August of 1968. The ribbon over the top was broken and it looked like someone had taken a shot, that’s all that was missing. Every year since then I’ll take a shot on his birthday. It tastes fantastic!

Been there done that. Quite a few of my parents bottles “converted into tea”

I’m pretty sure we tossed it. If I’d have been thinking, I’d have poured the booze out and saved the decanter, but that was a whirlwind of a few days.

He had a lot of old decanters. Mostly wild turkey. Probably 2-3 dozen like this. I have several and love to look at them. They remind me of him.

LINK

He also had some Early Times of people like Abe Lincoln, Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Pancho Villa, several of Elvis, etc.

Here's been my experience with old liquors:
Rules of thumb:
1. If the cork is broken, no matter what it is, toss it. If crust falls off when you unscrew it, toss.
2. If the booze costs under $30/bottle unopened, and it's of unknown age, and 3/4 full or less, toss.
3. If it's a mixer, toss.
4. If it's a liquor, like Kalula, or Baileys. Toss.
5. If it's a liquor like Amaretto, taste, but show no mercy if it's off.
6. If you're in college, ignore rules 1-5 and mix all that shite together in the bathtub.
