New Orleans with children

My son called and asked if we would like to go to a cheerleading competition in New Orleans for the oldest grandchild.
My initial answer was NO, but my wife is worried that the two younger grandchildren might get bored and we could help keep an eye on them. We will be staying near the Moriel? center.
It's been decades since I have visited NO (Sugar Bowl games) and I never felt unsafe, but times have changed and maybe we can help occupy the younger kids time. We won't be out after dark.
Are there any kid friendly restaurants for breakfast or lunch? They will eat pho/chinese/dumplings and the usual hamburgers/sandwiches. Will probably treat my son/dil for dinner. He loved Mr.B's BBQ shrimp and Court of two Sisters banana foster when we took him years ago.

The area by the convention center is safe and you will be fine
The new children's museum in City Park is great and would be a nice day with them
The World War 2 museum is wonderful, depending on the age of the children
Cochon Butcher is great for sandwiches right there

Can walk down to the Aquarium and Insectarium from the Convention Center plus there's a new outdoor park right there. Also maybe try a river steamboat thing.

Not too far down Tchoup is Barracuda. Solid food, and it's all outside so kids can be kids and it isn't an issue. Weather should be nice this weekend too

Could do an entire day at City Park. Beignets without the hassle of the Quarter, Storyland, putt-putt.

This. They could also ride the streetcar out to City Park.

If the aquarium still has that parakeet room, kids love that. Other posters have covered the best nearby restaurants already.

Thank you all for the input. My wife and I appreciate the input. We have never experienced New Orleans except when there was a football game.
My thoughts during the Sugar Bowls past biased me, and now that I have a grandchild competing in an athletic event, it's entirely different. I'm 71 years old and those kids are what I and my wife live for.
But why do you have a competition in New Orleans? Is this like softball?

Thank you for not portraying your city as a shithole as some posters are prone to do.

Beignets at the cafe du monde in city park after the children’s museum and doing Storyland in city park, the sculpture garden, and perhaps a gondola ride or swan paddle boat would be a wonderful day with the kiddos, all contained within the park

Cheerleading comp in the convention center is a great fit.
Cochon Butcher is close and great for kids.
Delacroix is a great view and can kill some time.

Cochin Butcher is great for kids. A little pricey but friendly as it gets

Walk down the levee to the French Market, head back up to get beignets (at Café Du Monde), walk back to the Audubon Aquarium, and then head over to Cochon.....
That's if you're looking to kill time with the little ones while the parents are in the convention center.
Or if y'all are feeling adventurous buy the $3 per person all day pass and ride the ferry across to Algiers and back or go uptown on the street car and back, that's the kind of stuff kids love.
