Friend,
I am sorry to hear of the reason you will be in Houston and we shall pray for you and your family.
It has been a full year since I visited Houston and I must confess I have a particular favor towards the original Ninfa’s on Navagation. Honestly, though, I’m not entirely convinced there is a significant difference between the big well known Tex-Mex restaurants in Houston. They are all decent be they El Tiempo, Ninfas, Candente, or Teotihuacan. I prefer Ninfas, but it’s not worth arguing over the best because they are all good, not great.
If you are willing also to consider other forms of Mexican TulaneLSU’s top 10 Mexican eateries in Houston may be of some use.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

People who suggest Lupe Tortilla as a viable option for Tex Mex should immediately be looked at with suspicion and contempt.

That’s why I said for the experience. I feel like waiting in that line and going to Irma’s are experiences in the Houston Mexican scene you have to try.

go to candente on tuesday for the fajita specials. there's really nothing in town comparable for tex-mex. people recommending other places just haven't been.

No one needs to wait in line for mediocre Mexican food for the “experience”…Houston or not Houston.

I don’t know Lupe Tortillas but lauding El Tiempo as the best is along these lines.
It’s good. For the price it should be better.

This is the correct answer. Candente is currently the best in Houston.

I've never had anything there but their fajitas, and those fajitas are legitimately good. You are TRIPPIN if you think they're bad

Lupe makes good tortillas and fajitas, everything else is ok.
I need to try Candente, we love The Pit Room.

The chicken and shrimp are OK but way too much lime in their beef fajitas.
But I will say their flour tortillas are the best Ive ever had when they come out hot. But it's in the name sooooo.......

Hugo’s always a solid choice.

I like their beef fajitas, although I am not the biggest fan of lime with beef. But it works. And their flour tortillas are homemade and super thin — and great.
I first went to Lupe Tortilla over 30 years ago — and at that time I thought it was great. I still think it is very good, but El Tiempo Cantina, to me, is considerably better.

Lupe is my favorite of the local chains. I stick to their beef fajitas and regular margs and think it’s pretty good.

Tony's Mexican restaurant on Ella Boulevard serves up street tacos with their jalapeño sauce, which is excellent.

Tried Tony's once, not a fan.
