I greatly enjoy all "Louisiana" dishes that are properly prepared and done well.

I tell you what, let a Louisiana steak and gravy be compared to the same dish from anywhere in the country and the Louisiana dish kills it. Same with pork dishes..there are just so many breaded chops a man can stand.

I've had very good jambalaya. It's just not my kind of dish no matter how well it's prepared. Odd that I feel that way since I love rice. I don't like chicken much, though, so I'm usually eating around that to get to the sausage and the shrimp if that's an ingredient.

Give me gumbo, etouffee or rice and gravy, but I've never gotten all the excitement over jambalaya.

I think it depends who cooks any of the mentioned food items whether you will think it's overrated or not. I've had bad and great versions of all of the food items mentioned - jambalaya, red beans & rice, especially gumbo, poboys, etc.

I've lived in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. People from New Orleans cook jambalaya about as well as they can pave a road. Gumbo is hit or miss in new Orleans too. Po-boys are pretty shitty in Baton Rouge as far as restaurants go. It just depends on who cooks it. The best Louisiana food is cooked in people's homes whose families go back multiple generations in Louisiana.

yeah, but it's not if they can be good or bad, the question was overrated. I think alot of people just put what their least favorite louisiana food is.

Jambalaya has never excited me. I wouldn't call it overrated though since I rarely hear people raving about it. I could be wrong, but I imagine most cook it for tailgates b/c its cheap to make for a large crowd. Its an art and when done right is great, but even at it's peak it can't compete with a well (not great) made gumbo or etouffee.

to sum it up:

Great Jambalaya<<<Decent Gumbo, Etouffee, etc

I've always thought red beans and rice was pretty overrated.

Well, it IS just red beans and rice. It's just a traditional, cheap, filling, Monday, do the wash day, kind of food. It's not some high fallutin bistro cuisine. For what it is, it's damn good, especially if done right. It's still a dish that's hard to catagorize as over-rated. Who's "rating" it so high in the first place?

While I do love a good jambalaya, I must admit that it gets more love and attention than it probably deserves. It too is just a traditional and cheap dish that's actually better than the simple ingredients would suggest, but some folks act like it's really something special. I've been guilty of this myself.

As is most traditional Louisiana food. I don't hate red beans and rice. I just know too many people who talk it up way too much.

My dad was a great jambalaya cook, so I grew up on it. He cooked it well, and not just for large crowds either.

There are PLENTY of other dishes I'd get rid of before a good jambalaya.

I don't really think any Louisiana food is "overrated" though. I just eat what I like, and that happens to be pretty much everything.

I don't really get the overrated talk for jambalaya.

Do I think that jambalaya is the greatest Louisiana-based dish out there? No.

Do I think that it's a good dish to feed a large number of people with ease for a tailgate, fishing/hunting camp, or party? Definitely, and really that's primarily how I see it used. It's not like people serve it at dinner parties or upscale restaurants. It's a casual food for a casual setting.

I don't know very many people that cook it for dinner regularly or order it at restaurants because the love it so much.
