I was thinking about just going full send and getting another KitchenAid Mixer and getting a meat grinder attachment to go with it

That said, I don't do a lot of baking and am wondering if it might make more sense to get a dedicated meat grinder instead.

LEM makes a good product for a casual grinder

I have the kitchen aid grinder attachment and we never use it. Too small, too messy and it heats up too quickly

Get a dedicated grinder

Definitely get a dedicated grinder. The kitchen aid attachments I would use only for very light and occasional work.

How do you plan on using it? If you are regularly grinding deer meat and such I would recommend getting something heavy duty.

I have a Meat double grind which has been awesome for ground meat. Double grind saves me from having to pass the meat through a second time.

The Cabela’s commercial grinders are pretty good too.

+1 to this.

I like my MEAT! grinder and have the mixer to attach to it. LEM is always good.

Mainly plan on using it for beef blends. I was planning on blending some organ meats like liver and beef heart into the blends instead of just eating them by themselves.

Thinking maybe a 10% organ meat ratio blended with other cuts like sirloin and brisket

I went from a cheap Amazon grinder to a Lem BigBite #8 and realized I wasted so much time feeding that lil grinder. Now I cut whatever I'm grinding into strips and just drop them down the throat without even bogging down the grinder or using the horn to push it through. It also comes with the ability to add a foot switch.

It takes longer to clean the grinder than it does to grind 25 pounds of meat, it's that fast.

Amazon has them for $419.00. LINK

I'm probably going to be doing 5 lbs or less at a time

Wonder if that might be overkill

I know a few people who bought the MEAT! 500w grinder and have been quite happy, those run around $150ish or so. I used to use my Kitchenaid mixer/grinder to grind up briskets when they went on sale but it was a slow process.

I started processing my own venison and making sausage so I bought a Meat! 1hp with the foot pedal during their Black Friday sale and have been quite impressed with it. Something like that is definitely overkill for just a few pounds though.

I bought this cheapo off Amazon 6 years ago and have ground hundreds of pounds of deer and pork with it. It would do fine for the amount you're talking about. When/if it ever craps out, I'll probably go with something bigger and beefier.

Amazon Link

FYI: the stuffer isn't worth a crap so I bought a dedicated stuffer for making sausage and boidin.

I doubt it. Every recommendation I see on the sausage making sites says "get one bigger than you think you need". That means you can start shopping for a dedicated sausage stuffer. LOL!!!!

FYI, it takes about the same amount of space as a stand mixer.

I make three pounds at a time and use my KitchenAid , works great. I grind country style boneless ribs that I mix with ground deer meat , spices peppers and sometimes cheese.

I've got the MEAT! 500w and its perfect for 5-25lbs at a time, a few times a year. Attachments, auger, etc etc are aluminum so be ok with hand washing but its worth the $$ savings. Best bang for the buck..

I have this one, which according to Amazon is now 14 years old. I only use it 3-4 times a year for sausage. It still blasts through a twin pack of pork shoulder no problem.

I have the LEM 3/4 hp grinder and it is very well made and engineered. Have used it for years to make deer and pork sausage and home made ground meat from beef roasts , wild hog, chicken bones for dogs. Very satisfied.

I did this at first and broke the gears in my mixer.

Do this. I got a LEM big bite #12 and have loved it so far.

A 0.5 HP grinder will be more than sufficient for the type of work you’ll be using it for.
