What are your tips/tricks to making a tasty batch?

Use a dutch oven, and add Tabasco and siracha sauce to the oil to give it a bit of heat.

equal parts Frank's and butter, sprinkle with ranch dressing instead of salt.

Target brand extra butter.
Popcorn button on the microwave makes it perfect.

Air popper, melted butter (sometimes ghee), salt (and if I'm feeling crazy, crystalline MSG or King Arthur's Vermont White Cheddar Powder)

I use a large heavy stainless pot, enough oil to cover the bottom lightly after swirling it around, and toss a small pat of butter in there. Let it melt and get warm, toss in about 5 kernels. When the first one pops, dump the rest of the popcorn in and every 15-20 seconds shake the pot on the burner. It is about the same length of time as using the microwave, but you get way more popcorn out of it and tastes better.

Step 1: Buy Flavacol from Amazon. Gives it that movie corn look and taste.
Heavy-bottom stainless 5-quart pot with lid. Couple teaspoons of coconut oil to cover bottom of pot. Heat on medium. Put about 4 kernels of Orville Redenbacher in with lid on and wait until they pop.
Add about 2/3 cup kernels. Sprinkle in about 2 teaspoons Flavacol, shake to combine, and slide off the heat for 30 seconds. This is said to allow kernels to come to an even temperature before popping, which results in fewer un-popped kernels.
Put back on heat and cook, shaking the pot now and then, until popping almost stops. Crack the lid a time or two late in the cooking to let steam/moisture out and keep the corn dry. Serve.
Adapted from Simply Recipes. Can add butter.

Sometimes I toss in a couple tablespoons of white sugar and it comes out like old style Kettle Corn.

That's what I do. Just keep an eye on it lest it catches fire. I've never had that happen, though.

Black Jewell microwave popcorn is terrific. I toss it in good olive oil. Add whatever seasoning you like.

Make some clarified butter, that is, butter with the water and solids removed, so it can be used to cook with. Use it instead of oil. Salt to taste.

Whirly bird popper, coconut oil with a couple drops of crab boil. I like Amish Country kernels, especially baby white but the red and purple are also good. If you have good corn, you don't need much flavoring.

I use a deep pan with a lid. Melt enough coconut oil to at least half of the kernel. Just throw one in. When that one pops through the kernels in and cover. Just shake it and take it off when it stops popping
