I typically use Royal Oak and like it. Wicked Good is good too, but generally more expensive than Royal Oak.

At one time, Cowboy was ok, then it just became trashy. I tried another bag lately just to see if it had improved. It had not. It's ok if you want to open up the Primo and let it burn itself out, but that's about it.

I go through a ton. Can't remember the brand, but I found a 2x4 in one. I thought to myself, hope this isn't pressure treated.

Wrong. Fogo is consistently excellent and much better than Jealous Devil. That is a fact despite the downvotes from what I believe are Jealous Devil representatives/employees.

I've seen some out there trolling and schticks...

...but the "vehemently opposed to an obscure lump charcoal brand most people have never heard of" schtick is new.

I'm using FOGO right now. I had been using JD but I couldn't find it on Amazon so I ordered FOGO. Honestly? I like JD better. JMO.

Fogo is good stuff. I use their stuff in the black bag. not the "premium"

I say the best is what you have on hand and the worst is what you don’t have. The rest is just part of the challenge of the cook.

Show us on the doll where Jealous Devil touched you.

ETA: multiple posts in a row saying the same damn thing is “unhinged.”

I bought the bigass bag of cowboy at costco and that shite burns so quick and the pieces are so small. Id say 1/3rd of the bag is dust and pieces the size of a walnut or smaller.

Yeah, it's universally regarded as one of the worst.

Have used Best of the West charcoal a few times recently and have been satisfied.

20 lb bag of Best of the West Masters Selection is $10 at Sam’s. Lots of big pieces. Did a 14 hr cook on the egg and still had plenty of fuel left the next day. For the price, it’s hard to beat.

Royal Oak sparks a lot with the looftlighter, and about half the bag is usually pretty small chunks, but it gets the job done. Lasts long enough for my needs, and it's always available at my grocery.

I use Royal Oak most as my preferred choice for availability, quality and price. A nice smoke too.
I like the BGE brand but it’s a bit more expensive and less available.
I don’t like kingsford.

During my experimental period I have had some others that have had pieces of siding, deck planks, 2x4, rocks, metal and other items that don’t belong.

I’ve settled on the Royal Oak.

Royal Oak

I have found large (3-4 inches)concrete rocks in 2 separate bags purchased at the same time.

Desperately trying to get rid of the current bags I have because they won't stay lit without dousing in a fire starter. Garbage.

I used lump charcoal for the first time the other day after seeing this thread. I'm not sure why but the idea just never popped in my head. I've always had a hard time controlling the temp on my charcoal grill/smoker with briquettes.

Lump is a game changer though. I thought it was much easier to raise and lower temps as needed, and I used the cheap crap (Best Choice brand from Market Basket). It was mostly smaller pieces but I don't know the difference yet seeing as how this was my first time using lump. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the better stuff next time.

Thanks FDB

I’m not long into the lump charcoal game having just recently gotten a new Chargriller multi-fuel grill. I didn’t even know there was much difference but can already agree Cowboy is shite. Royal Oak was decent. BGE, using now, is really good all around.

I found a Mexican brand at one of the Ideal Markets in New Orleans recently that was surprisingly quite good. It said it was pure mesquite. It was in sort of a small bag, but only about $5-6. Nice mixture of chunk sizes, with a nice amount of large pieces. Seemed to burn as well as the Royal Oak, which I normally purchase.

For some reason Royal Oak has been hard to find recently in NOLA. Central City Home Depot, Rest Depot and Walmart all had only some Kingsford crap. Found some at Elmwood Home Depot and bought 4 bags. Worker said they only get occassional shipments currently, and sell out quickly.

Isn't BGE made by Royal Oak?

It may be a slightly higher quality batch, but I've always heard they're quite close.

Updated a few brands. Tried FOGO super premium a month ago. Very big chunks. Only drawback is the sparking. Also, finding the Kamado Joe Big Block charcoal i'm getting from Lowe's also is having some sparking issues.
