You are about to hear 20 people say buy your favorite of each style of knife and avoid a set because it has stuff you won’t use.
That is good advice.
But to answer your question, get a wusthof set. Great knives. Good price. Easy for your in-laws to find and buy.

I have Shun classic knives for cooking. Have the chefs, santoku, utility, and paring knives, it was piecemealed together as gifts instead of one set. I really like them but they are a bit spendy, not sure if that might be overkill as a gift for in-laws.
Shun Classic Chefs Knife
I have a case of steak knives, but couldn't even tell you the brand.

This. Everyone will throw out a different brand.
FWIW I really like the Victorinox knives I have and if I was starting with new knives I would probably look at a set of Victorinox with the wood handles.

For cooking, I have a few different knives. This one is my favorite for cutting meats and vegetables.

Allot of people shite on cutco but I’ve had my set for 5 years now and it’s still rock solid. Lifetime warranty and in free home sharpening. Buy once cry once.

If location is a concern, I suggest really digging deep. A number of knife companies have their products made in Chine, including well-known brands like Zwillings/Henkels, Wusthof, and many American and some Japanese ones. Henkel and Wusthof do make their a number of knife lines in Germany, so take the extra minute to verify the country of origin.
Another trick is they will say German steel, Damascus steel, or Japanese steel but made in China.
Having said all of that, I have Wusthof Classic knives (chefs, santoku, paring, bread, tomato, and steak) and I love them.

Same here, with the occasional use of a paring knife for small work. Also, a couple oyster knives for shucking them fresh.
Chef's knife gets used 90+% of the time by me when needing to cut something.

Cutco for sure. Very pricey but you are buying for the quality and lifetime warranty/sharpening.

Another vote for Cutco. F’n love their table knives. You don’t need a whole set, pick out 5 including a chef’s knife and you’ll be set. We like the spatula spreader and the trimmer is also solid.

I came to ask a knife question, but I'll answer yours... Good chef knife, good paring knife, decent bread knife. You kind of get screwed on full sets.
