Careful with the mandoline. A buddy nearly lost his thumb to one last spring. Gruesome.

Step 1: Buy these kevlar gloves.

Step 2: Skip that guard that came with the mandoline

Step 3: Perfect slices every time.

When I make hamburgers for the crew, the mandoline comes out. It literally takes about one minute to put the tray with the lettuce, tomato, onions, and pickles together. Mine's dishwasher safe, though. I likely wouldn't use it nearly as much if I had to clean every part of it by hand every time I used it. As it is, I clean the blade by hand because we all know that sharp things don't go into the dishwasher.

Apple pie or ratatouille are other dishes where a mandoline is indispensible.

That would be my 22 qt. pressure canner. I can a lot of vegetables from my summer garden and it is a must have to do so safely.

What are all of you using a mortal and pestle for?

If you cook Thai/Vietnamese food with any frequency, it's a must have.

Not to mention toasting then grinding your own whole spices for all kinds of food. The taste difference is surprisingly large.

Dutch oven. Bought it last year with some Amazon gift cards after Christmas. Got the lodge 5 qt non enameled version and the lid doubles as a skillet. The wife thought it was too big and we wouldn’t use it much. Now she cooks in it more than I do.

Dad got me a nice handmade cleaver for Christmas. Haven’t used it yet but it is nice and heavy. I’ll snap a pic and post it later when I’m back home.

This thread reminded me I need a microplane. Just one-clicked Amazon.

I was going to say microplane

Versatile tool that I use pretty often. Great for finely grating hard cheeses like parm or romano so that they effortlessly melt into a sauce or make a beautiful nice soft pile on top of whatever you're putting it on.

Also great for grinding nutmeg (so much better than the pre ground stuff) and great for zesting. I'm sure there are some other practical uses I haven't thought much of.

It's also great if you like making a home made pesto

Will taste better than just tossing all the shite in the blender. You should really avoid cutting basil if you can.

I sliced part of my thumb on a cheese slicer. Hurt like hell and bled like crazy. Tossed it and got a different one with less space between the plane and blade.

we haven't used our since. i guess i should pull it out but the main thing i remember is it had like 15 sharp parts and you needed fireman gloves to get it back into the box without creating a bloody mess.

Me too. Literally minutes after I got it out of the box. Guard slipped and my thumb went right through it.
