I finally tried an Islay Scotch yesterday (Port Charlotte 10). First pour tastes Medicinal and strange. Does anyone here like it and did it take a while to get used to?

I found a bottle of Shieldaig Islay at Total Wine for $20. I'm familiar with Islay but I'm on a budget. I had hoped that it would scratch my itch. I ended up pouring the bottle out after a couple of glasses. My lesson was, you can't go cheap on Islay.

Lagavulin and Ardbeg are really good. Actually the unpeated Bruchladdich (Classic Laddie) is my favorite.

I only do Islay. The peatier the better. Caol Ila 18 yr is my favorite. Plenty of options below 100/bottle too.

I found this bottle at Hocus Pocus in Lake Charles. It was different for sure.

Drink it until the flavor of a wet Band-Aid is appealing and you will have reached scotch Nirvana.
Laphroaig 16 and Quarter Cask for me. I adored the 12 they bottled several years ago, but I can't find them anymore.

Those Islay scotches always taste like chloraseptic spray to me. I think my favorite region/palate preference is Campbeltown.

I love pete and I believe I liked it the first time I had it, but I'm kind of foggy on that. Currently have an almost empty Laphroaig Quarter Cask and bruichladdich port charlotte heavily peated scotch and a High West bourbon finished in islay barrels and all are fantastic.

It takes a few tastings to allow your pallate to adjust to that medicinal taste and open up to all the depth it has to offer. Also not all Islays are alike. I love Lagavulin but hate Laphroig. Lag has a nice fruitiness to it

Islay is by far my favorite region for whisky. Pretty much all of the previously mentioned distillers you cant go wrong with.
Recently had a pour of a 35 year aged bottle from the now closed down Port Ellen Distillery. Its ruined me...

I have a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue Ghost and Rare Port Ellen edition. I can't wait to try it. Need one more Ghost and Rare, the Brora Edition, to complete the vertical for a tasting.
Port Ellen will be reopening in the future. Will they honor the old juice that was previously made there, or will they just use the Port Ellen name and produce something different? Hope it's the former.

I prefer Speyside (Glen Grant, Glenfarclas, Aberlour to name a few), but I really enjoy Islay. Have toured Skye and Speyside distilleries, but Islay is for the next trip.
I agree with this. Of all the Islay barrels I've tried, this is probably the best mix of peat, age, and quality. Many don't like peaty scotch with cigars, but I love Lagavulin 16 with a mild to medium cigar.
