I am remodeling my kitchen, and not sure where to start.

There are companies that do both cabinets & countertops, you could probably get a better deal with on than hiring a contractor. But if you need gas run to your kitchen and have to demo to fit in a new ventilation for your stove I would get a contractor to make sure all building codes are followed.

Am I familiar with construction, well I had a construction gig for about a year and a half, but I never messed with kitchens. I will be there to oversee most of it.

Time frame, I was hoping no more than 5-7 days. My kitchen is small.

I agree with this. Be careful if you are changing your kitchen layout, moving appliances around, etc... That will probably require changes to your electrical/plumbing/gas lines, not to mention flooring (if you're keeping your existing flooring).

You may want to consider putting in new countertops and paint or refinish your existing cabinets and upgrade the hardware. That could save you a bundle.

Kitchens are expensive. What kind of budget are you trying to stay within?

Good luck with that. I just redid mine, I have a small kitchen too (10'x10' L-shaped) and my renovation lasted a few months dealing with multiple contractors and their unfortunate schedules. I was able to find a contractor that did my cabinets and granite for 5100$. Which is 10k less than the other contractors quoted. However, my cabinets arent custom and the guys screwed up and had to re-install them. It was a pain in the arse, but it's over and I saved a good bit of money.

If you're handy at all you can save a good bit doing the rest of the stuff. I did my backsplash and undercabinet lighting thanks to youtube for the help.

If modifying floor plan is desired, sketch floor plan based on the kitchen triangle. Then select your appliances (sink, dishwasher, range/oven, vent hood, microwave) so you have dimensions for the cabinet folks. Install more drawers than shelving units below the counters. Go find some cabinets you like, not worrying about countertops and whether they install them. Any tile/granite place can handle the counter installation. Install task lighting at the major work areas. Light is very important.

roughly 10k.

i have gas in my house. I have a gas dryer about 5ft from where my stove is.

Don't just have the cabinets redone in the same manner. Think about what you use and what makes sense. I had big pot drawers put where cabinets had been, added a pull out trash, etc. the space was the same but the way they were constructed was different.

I also switched the sink to a big arse undivided sink. It just makes sense. I can put icechests in there, turn my big pots on the side while cleaning, etc. I have no idea if it's trendy or not but it is a working sink and I love it.

5-7 days is not realistic, especially for an older place

you start tearing stuff out and you have no idea what you are going to find

I ended up having to re-wire my entire house while doing my kitchen

couple of things that I consider a must when remodeling an old kitchen:

- full extension drawer slides
- pull out shelves on the bottom cabinets
- cabinets all the way to the ceiling

if its small, try to have any wasted space and try to get as much counter space as possible

design a place/cabinet for the microwave so that it isn't just sitting on the counter
